Nic Men Split With Snow
John Sutherland and Jeremy Nielsen combined on a three-hitter Saturday as North Idaho defeated Snow 7-1 in the first game of a Scenic West Athletic Conference baseball doubleheader at NIC field.
Snow scored twice in the second inning and edged NIC (23-17, 12-11) 2-1 in the second game. Before the loss the Cardinals were 3-0 in the series, outscoring Snow 20-5.
Sutherland (3-2) allowed two singles in six innings, striking out 11 and walking three. He hadn’t won since March 20.
Rob Crain’s two-run single capped NIC’s five-run first. Crain, hitting No. 9 in the order, entered with just five RBIs for the season.
NIC’s Keith Osso went 4 for 6 on the day to take over the team batting lead at .337.
Kenny Huff hit for the cycle and finished 5 for 6 with four RBIs, and Arizona (22-25, 7-11 Pacific-10 Conference) piled up a season-high 28 hits to topple Washington State 21-3 at Tucson.
Huff, the first Wildcats player to hit for the cycle since 1995, tripled in the first, singled in the second, homered in the sixth and doubled in the eighth. The team’s 28 hits were six more than Arizona State had against WSU on April 14.
Ben Diggins and Ryan O’Donnell were both 4 for 5 for the Wildcats. Ray Hattenburg of the Cougars went 2 for 4 for his 21st multiple-hit game of the season. Hattenburg leads the club with a .373 batting average.
WSU (16-26, 4-11) won the series 2-1, but has dropped 13 of its last 17.
Softball
Shannon Fritzke and Tharen Michael hit two-run homers and three pitchers combined on a one-hitter, leading Pacific Lutheran (29-2-1, 13-1 Northwest Conference) to a 14-1 win at Whitworth (4-19, 3-11).
PLU’s Irene Bryant doubled twice, scored twice and had two RBIs. Aubrie Caldwell had Whitworth’s hit, a single.
Kylee Curry pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Rebecca Triplett followed with a one-hitter, and Community Colleges of Spokane (17-3 NWAACC) swept Everett 9-0, 15-0 at Spokane Falls CC.
Kris Rozett’s two-run double highlighted a four-run second in the opener. Triplett, Curry and Jill Miller had two RBIs apiece in the second game, Curry on a two-run homer in the first.
Rowing
Gonzaga’s men and women swept races against UC San Diego on Long Lake.
GU’s women’s varsity eight finished the 2,000-meter course in 7 minutes, 38 seconds, nearly 1 minute ahead of the field. The men’s varsity eight edged the Tritons 6:53 to 6:54.6, reversing a 4-second setback to UCSD three weeks ago.
Western Washington’s men defeated Washington State in four of five races at Lake Whatcom near Bellingham.
WSU won the novice eight race by 8 seconds.
Washington State’s novice eight women’s team defeated Michigan State and Clemson during races on Lake Ovid near East Lansing, Mich.
Michigan State won the other four races.
