White Boots Ferris Past Lc
By David White’s definition, no-name players in soccer are the ones who never get marked by opposing defenses.
Ones like him.
The Ferris High senior enjoys maintaining a low profile on the field, and he hopes to keep it that way.
But that’s unlikely if he keeps this up. White scored two goals Monday as the Saxons beat South Hill rival Lewis and Clark 4-1 in a key Greater Spokane League match at Ferris.
Ferris is 7-1 and tied with Mead for first place. LC drops to 6-2.
White, a midfielder, scored his team’s first goal on a pass from Nathan Crary at 11 minutes, and took a nice pass from Kevin Aronson to score the Saxons’ last goal at 67 minutes. He has 10 goals this spring, making him the league’s second-leading scorer.
“The defenses have been focusing on the star players and taking the pressure off the no-name guys,” White said. “It’s fun. There’s not as much pressure. I surprise myself every time I put the ball in the net.”
The Saxons surprised LC, dominating the Tigers in every aspect, said LC coach Harlan Slind.
Ferris held a 14-7 edge in shots, made more accurate passes and won with hard work.
“We had it taken to us today by a better team,” Slind said. “Defensively, we couldn’t handle anybody today. They crossed it all day on us.”
The Saxons’ hustle and physical style of play hasn’t been without a price, though. Ferris has three players out and another was hurt Monday. Captain Ian Clausen, a senior defender, might be done for the season with a stress fracture in his right foot. Starting goalie Jeremy Wang and senior midfielder Justin Benfield both have injured ankles.
In the second half Monday, junior defender Keane Sweet went for a slide tackle and was kicked in the face. He received a big gash below his left eyebrow and was taken to the hospital.
Yet coach Robin Crain was pleased that junior Jacob Rohwer stepped up and provided a huge spark off the bench. Rohwer, recently moved up from junior varsity, just missed a goal on a header and had another shot hit the crossbar.
“We’re playing really well and just doing the things we have to do to play to our potential, and it works,” Crain said. “We have lapses every once in a while, but for the most part we’re outworking our opponents.”
LC’s Grant Lundberg missed a penalty kick at 62 minutes that could have made it a one-goal game. Ferris goalie Shaun Wilson was called for a foul going for the ball against Lundberg in the penalty box.
