Chenoweth-Hage Asks For Bunker Hill Audit
Representatives of the General Accounting Office will meet Tuesday with one of Rep. Helen Chenoweth-Hage’s staff members to discuss an audit of the Bunker Hill Superfund Project.
The GAO, the investigative arm of Congress, anticipated the request for an audit even before it received a letter last week from Chenoweth-Hage, R-Idaho, she said Wednesday.
“They have staffed up for the task,” she said when asked if the GAO could meet her request for an expedited audit, with preliminary information available June 30. “They’re doing the best they can.”
GAO reports normally take as long as a year to complete, depending on their complexity.
Dave Wood of the GAO’s environmental protection office will meet with Nathan Olsen of Chenoweth-Hage’s staff Tuesday. They will discuss priorities and timelines, Chenoweth-Hage said.
The request for an audit was also signed by Idaho Sens. Larry Craig and Mike Crapo.
Chenoweth-Hage said the audit request was prompted by concerns of Shoshone County residents that the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has spent too much time and money on the cleanup of toxic metals surrounding the former Bunker Hill smelter.
