Showdown Set For Soccer Title
Mead’s late-match surge Wednesday night assured that the Greater Spokane League boys soccer title will be decided in the season’s final match.
Paul Mauk scored at 78 minutes to force overtime and Matt Folsom scored 4 minutes into overtime, lifting Mead to a 2-1 win at Central Valley.
Mead (8-1 GSL) remained tied for first place with Ferris, a 7-0 winner at East Valley. Evan Cummings scored three goals in 30 minutes and Ferris (8-1) had five shots in the first 15 minutes during a win over EV (2-7). Cummings also assisted on one of Josh Proctor’s two goals.
Ferris and Mead play at 5 p.m. Saturday in the fifth game of a league quintupleheader at Albi Stadium. Both teams have 24 points in the league’s points system.
The league champion automatically qualifies for the State 4A playoffs. The No. 2 team, and the third-place team, will host district opening-round matches on Wednesday.
In other league action, Lewis and Clark and University secured playoff spots during a U-Hi shootout win over the Tigers; and Shadle Park kept alive its playoff hopes with a home win over Rogers… . Tyler Falco, Jon Walter, Kirk Jones and David Gordon scored during a 4-3 shootout to lift U-Hi (6-4, 16 points) to a 2-1 win over LC (6-3, 17 points) at Hart Field. Alex Perez scored during regulation and the shootout for LC. U-Hi completed its regular season and is currently tied with CV (5-4), but U-Hi is playoff-bound. The Titans own regular-season wins over CV and Shadle, the teams they could tie for fourth or fifth places. CV plays LC on Saturday and would finish in third place with a win… Sophomore David Peterson totaled three goals and two assists to guide Shadle (4-5, 13 points) over visiting Rogers (0-9). Seniors Kenny Towner and Brandon Gilbert, the starting goalkeeper, scored their first career goals. Shadle can finish with 16 points by defeating Mt. Spokane on Saturday. Shadle owns the tiebreaking edge over CV by virtue of a regular-season win… . Mike Kelso assisted on every goal, including Aaron Fielder’s second score on a header, and North Central (3-6) eliminated visiting Gonzaga Prep (4-5, 12 points) from playoff contention. Idle Mt. Spokane (4-5, 12 points) is also out of the playoff chase.
Baseball
Freshman David Williams pitched a three-hitter, striking out seven, to lead Riverside (4-13) to a 7-4 win at Newport (2-13) in the Great Northern League. Justin Kapple added two hits for Riverside.
Reliever Adam Busch entered in the second inning and slowed down visiting Post Falls (4-8), allowing Moscow (6-8) to rally for a 6-4 win in the Border League.
Softball
Ingrid Lochelt’s two-out RBI single in the eighth lifted Lake City (15-3, 11-3) to an 8-7 win at Lewiston and a split of a Border League doubleheader. Brittenie West scattered six hits and struck out four to lead Lewiston (13-6, 11-4) to a 4-0 win in the opener. Lake City is tied for first place with Coeur d’Alene, one-half game ahead of Lewiston and one game up on Colville (9-3).
Briana Young won both games, totaling 14 strikeouts and two walks, and had the winning RBI in the first game of Pullman’s 4-2, 5-0 sweep of visiting Riverside in the Great Northern League. Young, who has 96 strikeouts and five walks this season, drove in Kelly Schneider in the fifth for a 3-0 lead in the opener. Schneider went 3 for 3 and Christa Brossman had a two-run single in the second game. Pullman is 9-1 in league, Riverside 1-3.
