Yakima Tries To Fight Census Undercounting
Yakima County officials are so concerned about the prospects of undercounting by the U.S. Census Bureau that they’re taking matters into their own hands.
The county’s Complete Count Committee has set up a hotline for people to report census problems.
Officials fear the county’s large population of transient farm workers and people who don’t speak English will be undercounted.
Thousands of people throughout the Yakima Valley have not received census 2000 forms, causing officials to fear an undercount as they claim occurred 10 years ago.
Census officials deny any problem and say everyone who was missed will be counted in the next phase of the operation - home visits.
