Freshman Travis Webb earned his first Greater Spokane League base- ball win on Friday, and in the process damaged Central Valley’s hopes for its first league title.

Webb (1-1) pitched a complete-game five-hitter, striking out five and allowing one earned run in Lewis and Clark’s 2-1 victory over the Bears.

Gino D’Aprile backed Webb by finishing 2 for 2 with one run scored and one run batted in.

CV (9-4) dropped into third place, behind North Central (10-2) and Ferris (10-3). CV plays at NC on Tuesday, when the 16-game season enters its final eight days.

LC (5-8) is trying to make the six-team district field. Three teams are tied for fifth place at 6-6.

Also in the league, Adam Oakley improved to 5-0 and Eric Everson went 4 for 4 as Ferris moved within one-half game of first place NC with a 13-2 home win over Gonzaga Prep (1-12). Oakley struck out six, walked none and three a three-hitter. Everson, who also tripled and scored three times, and Travis Wiles hit two-run home runs in the first. G-Prep’s Ryan Thacker, son of Ferris coach John Thacker, homered… . Winning pitcher Ben Sorcinelli (4-2) lofted a sacrifice fly in the seventh, scoring Jeremy McVay, and fourth-place Shadle Park (8-4) edged host Mead 3-2. Dan Thigpen pitched a three-hitter and struck out eight for Mead (6-6).

Josh Taylor went 6 for 7 on the day, with four runs and four RBIs, and struck out six to win the second game and complete Lakeside’s 17-7, 13-2 sweep at Newport (2-15) in the Great Northern League. Paul Scott added six RBIs and 5-for-6 hitting for the Eagles (14-3). Newport’s Chase Melendez went 2 for 3 with three runs and two RBIs in the opener… . Also in the GNL, Andy Belzer had three RBIs in the first game and Phil Eggleston added three RBIs in the second game, helping Chewelah (8-9) to a 13-3, 11-1 sweep at Deer Park (4-13). Chewelah’s Kevin Olson had two RBIs in the opener and two hits in the nightcap to support Sam Washington, who struck out four in four innings.

Blake Whiteman pitched a two-hitter in the opener and Ryan Holland had six hits on the day, as Coeur d’Alene (13-2) swept visiting Lewiston 17-5, 14-11 to jump over the Bengals (12-3) for first place in the Border League.

Aaron Mortlock hit a grand slam in the third and a three-run shot in the sixth, leading Northwest Christian (13-0) to a 17-9 win at Northport (9-1) in a matchup of Panorama League division leaders. Dustin Greenup added RBIs to back Zach Strandy, who struck out eight.

Softball

Kayla Adams’ no-hitter went for naught as Ferris (7-8) scored on walks and errors to edge visiting Lewis and Clark 3-2 in the GSL. Kaylene Fountain hit a home run, but the third-place Tigers (11-4) couldn’t overcome four errors and Adams’ four walks… . Jessica Murray pitched a two-hitter, registering her sixth shutout since April 18, and Annie Boyd homered to guide Shadle Park (12-2) to a 7-0 win over visiting Central Valley (9-6). Murray went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Jennifer Stockman went 3 for 3 as the Highlanders closed within one game of first-place University… . Anna Vagstad threw a four-hitter, striking out five and walking two, in her first outing since April 11, and Elana Mainer went 3 for 4 with two runs to guide Mead (3-11) to a 7-0 win over visiting Gonzaga Prep (5-10). Mead’s Adriane Kehl had a two-run triple in the third… . Jodi Hultquist struck out eight and Bri Bowman had a two-run double in the third, and Mt. Spokane (8-6) notched a 6-0 win over visiting North Central (0-14).

Becky Hamel had three RBIs in the opener and struck out 11 in the second game as Medical Lake (8-3) swept visiting Pullman 10-6, 4-2 to knock the Greyhounds (9-3) out of first place in the GNL. Pullman’s Christa Brossman had three hits on the day… . Briana Shasky threw a four-hitter in the opener and first-place Lakeside (7-1) overcame a 13-3 deficit in hits in the second game to sweep Riverside 4-3, 3-2. Lakeside threw out Jaime Darby at home in the sixth to preserve the second-game win. Darby had three hits and allowed just three hits while taking the loss… . Newport’s doubleheader at Chewelah was rained out and rescheduled for Monday.

Blake Hoorelbeke pitched a three-hitter in the opener and Kari Lenz had a two-run double in the second game, helping Coeur d’Alene (13-3) sweep visiting Lewiston 3-1, 11-1 and move ahead of idle Lake City (12-3) for first place in the Border League. Lewiston is 11-6.

Girls tennis

Lisa VanGemert defeated Lisa Trefts 6-3, 6-1 in a matchup of undefeated No. 1 singles, and Gonzaga Prep (8-0) all but wrapped up its fourth consecutive GSL title with a 4-3 win at Shadle Park (7-1). G-Prep swept the four singles. Shadle won the three doubles, including Lindsey Scribner and Whitney Persch’s 7-6, 6-4 win at No. 1.

Boys soccer

Luke Knauss headed in a rebound at 68 minutes to lift Chewelah (1-9) to a 3-2 upset of visiting Deer Park (4-6) in the GNL. DP defeated Chewelah 3-1 on April 4. Chewelah’s season is over. DP will qualify for the league playoffs as the No. 3 or No. 4 seed.
