So Long ‘Miss Saigon’

“Miss Saigon,” the long-running British musical set against the backdrop of the Vietnam War, will close Dec. 31, after a nearly 10-year run of 4,063 performances. Its final curtain will come six months after the June 25 closing of “Cats,” another big British musical produced by Cameron Mackintosh. “Much as I will miss ‘Saigon’ at the Broadway Theater, I am utterly thrilled at how long this serious musical has run both on Broadway and in London,” Mackintosh said. “Miss Saigon,” starring Jonathan Pryce and Lee Salonga, opened in New York on April 11, 1991. The musical has grossed more than $264 million and been seen by more than 5.9 million theatergoers. It is a love story between an American soldier and a young Vietnamese woman.
