Adams County Othello
The second Fiesta Amistad will celebrate two cultures this weekend. It will include free entertainment in the park as well as a motorcycle show. The Boys and Girls Club will host free activities for kids in the park. Kiddie fun begins as 1:30 p.m. with the Ronald McDonald show.
Ferry County Curlew
Kids planning to attend the Curlew Schools are asked to register beginning Aug. 15. It is important that children new to the district sign up at the school between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Those already attending will receive forms in the mail this week. Call (509) 770-4931. School opens Sept. 5.
Grant County Ephrata
A study by the Washington Institute Foundation shows Grant and Adams counties were among the 21 - of 39 - Washington Counties that limited 1999 property tax increases to the rate of inflation, the aim of Referendum 47. Commissioner Deborah Moore says the county is very conscious of the referendum and hopes to stick to it as “it’s what the public wants.”
Lincoln County Odessa
City crews are resurfacing and repairing with Deutschesfest in mind. The city is in the middle of major highway and sewer projects, requiring streets to be torn up. The city aims to finish the work before thousands who love German food and fun show up next month.
Pend Oreille County Deer Valley
The historic one-room schoolhouse known as Jore School is moving. Eastern Washington University will feature the quaint building at its Cheney Normal School Heritage Center on the EWU campus in Cheney. EWU officials looked at 11 one-room schoolhouses for the project. The historic building was owned by Crown Pacific and Riley Creek Lumber, which traded it for two tickets to this season’s EWU-Montana football game.
Spokane County Medical Lake

Whitman County Pullman
Donors are needed for a blood drive Aug. 17, from 2-6 p.m. All donated blood will be used for people in the Palouse/Lewiston-Clarkston area. Benewah County St. Maries
The annual 5K Paul Bunyan Fun Run/Walk is set for Sept. 2. Last year, a record 155 runners joined in. Entry forms are at Napa Auto Parts, Suntan Etc., Spilt Ends, Dr. Thomson’s office, the state Department of Lands and Winner’s Corner. Entry fees are $9 per person, $8 for kids under 13 and $32 for a family of four. Registration starts at 6:30 a.m. on race day, with races starting at 8 a.m. Participants get a T-shirt. Bonner County Sandpoint
Pressure canner gauges should be tested yearly to ensure healthy home-preserved food. The Bonner County Master Food Preservers will offer free testing clinics from 9:30-11:30 a.m. Thursday and Sept. 12 at the Bonner County Extension office at the Fairgrounds. Canners who’d like to have gauges tested but can’t attend may leave their pressure canner lids with gauges attached at the extension office and pick them up later.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Bonners Ferry Grain will close in September. It was built in the 1920s, said business manager Fran Oakes. It was used by farmers who had BFG store and broker their grain for them. Growers now build their own storage bins and broker it over the Internet. Oakes said the building’s future use has not been determined.
Kootenai County Post Falls
The food bank needs back-to-school supplies and clothing. Food bank members want to remind the community how important it is for students to fit in at school and that clothing plays an important role. Call Kathy at (208) 773-0139.
Latah County Moscow
A new program aids students attending the University of Idaho by helping furnish their temporary home. The Household Goods Exchange needs kitchen items, bedding and furniture. UI Residences is offering space in the Park Village Apartments for storing the items until passed on to new students. Shoshone County Silverton
A lost male cat appeared at the Silver Wood Good Samaritan Center last week and may have found a new home. Dayroom attendant Loleta Carle said that if no one claims the cat, the center will probably keep it because the residents enjoy having it around. The cat is white with orange markings, blue eyes and long hair. Call the center at (208) 556-1147.

Lincoln County Libby
Flathead Valley Community College’s Libby campus will be closed Aug. 24 for an in-service meeting. All offices will be closed and the campus will reopen at 8 a.m. Aug. 25.
