Othello
The Othello School Board is finishing up the hiring of new staff, filling most of the 40 vacancies in the past few weeks. Out of 29 teachers’ openings, only five are left to be filled. Hiring for support staff is also going well.
Ferry County
Republic
Those wishing to read transcripts or listen to tape recordings of County Commission meetings must make an appointment. The commissioners recently decided to keep the hours and days the same, but to require appointments so staffers could have time set aside to assist those wishing public access to records. Records are available Wednesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon, and 1-4 p.m.
Grant County
Soap Lake
Parents for Kids recently received a $28,000 grant. The nonprofit organization raises money to help kids needing financial assistance. The grant funds will go toward new playground equipment. The group also received a $15,000 donation from school supporters Bing and Jennie Ramm. Parents for Kids defrays many of the district’s costs on equipment and activities through its fund-raising efforts.
Lincoln County
Wilbur
City officials are asking residents near the city limits for help with the new town survey. Folks who may have had their land surveyed are being asked to share their information. The town would like to have as many “markers” as possible to make sure the town boundaries are marked correctly. Those with information are asked to bring it to city hall by Sept. 15. Copies will be made and originals returned promptly.

Elk
Jennifer Moskwik of Elk has been awarded a $1,500 Dean’s Scholarship for the 2000-2001 school year at Eastern Washington University. Moskwik graduated in June from Riverside High School where she was a member of Washington Drug-Free Youth, drama club and National Honor Society. She plans to study elementary education at Eastern, where she will be a freshman this fall.

A trust fund has been set up to help Georgeann Dahlen, whose home and possessions were destroyed in a July 28 fire. Money may be directed to the Dahlen Family Trust at any branch of Inland Northwest Bank.

Colfax
Gardeners who planted an extra row for needy members of the community can bring their donations to the Council on Aging and Human Services in Colfax. The Plant a Row program was developed to encourage home gardeners to share their produce. Call 877-492-2727.

Priest River
The second annual Priest River Yacht Club Raft Race will begin at 1 p.m. Aug. 20 at the mouth of Priest River. There are three categories rafters can compete in: floaters with no motors, paddles or oars; rafts with oars and paddles; and rafts built for under $50 that hold four adults and a medium-sized cooler, propelled by other than a motor. Bonners Ferry
The book “Port of Two Brothers” was published recently by former resident Paul Schlener. In the book Schlener mentions Bonners Ferry frequently. Paul and his brother, John, moved to Brazil in 1951 to build homes and establish churches and schools. Paul and his wife, Jessie, live in Moses Lake, Wash., now. They will visit Bonners Ferry during the 1945 class reunion Saturday at the Kootenai River Inn.

Space Camp 2000, a vacation Bible school, includes food crafts and Bible stories. The camp is held from 9 a.m. to noon at the Spirit Lake Baptist Church. Call 623-5680.

Moscow
The Magic Moments preschool and day care is set to reopen this week after vandalism last week closed it. Apparently, someone broke in and poured paint and bleach water throughout the school, damaging equipment, toys and furniture. The Moscow Sheriff’s department is investigating.
Shoshone County
Kellogg
Watering hours have been set by the Central Shoshone Water District. Water will be shut off to any home or business for watering in other than the set hours of 6-8 a.m. and 7-9 p.m. daily. A fee of $25 will be charged for the first offense and will double each time after. The district is conserving water for fire protection.

Libby
Work on the U.S. Highway 37 bridge crossing the Kootenai River will begin causing delays up to 30 minutes long Thursday through Aug. 18, according to a spokesman for Blattner Construction. The work will start at 10 p.m. and continue to 6 a.m. to lessen traffic backups and to prevent delays for the majority of people.
