Adams County Othello
Millennium Magic is the theme for the county fair Sept. 13-16. On the agenda is a parade, demolition derby and rodeo. Those wishing to enter exhibits are asked to pick up a premium book at post offices and county buildings. Advance tickets are at businesses countywide.
Ferry County Republic
The annual Northeast Washington Fiddle contest will be Saturday and Sunday. Fiddlers of all ages from the Northwest and Canada will compete for cash prizes at the Republic School from 9 a.m. through the evening. For more information, call (509) 775-3819.
Grant County Desert Aire
Grant County Public Utility District hydro-engineering supervisor Rodger York was recently awarded the Millennium Medal for excellence in engineering and education - an international award. He has been with the PUD since 1980, and acts in Sunset Theatre productions in Desert Aire.
Lincoln County Bluestem
The test results are in, but biologists still don’t know what caused a massive fish kill in the former Walker Creek this spring. Samples taken from the 2,000-plus rainbow trout and from stream sediments showed no trace of pesticides. Officials say the pesticides could have been flushed from the samples before they were gathered. Fish disease is unlikely, as all living things in the creek were eradicated - not just the trout.
Pend Oreille County Cusick
The old Diamond Match Co. site, vacant since 1957, is being considered for a wetlands learning center. The Pend Oreille Conservation District is developing a plan for creating a wetlands education site. The 20 acres is north of the boat launch parking area between the Pend Oreille and the new dike. The center also would provide hiking trails and picnic areas along the shoreline.
Spokane County Spokane

Stevens County Colville
Pharmacist Mick Lee, 42, recently participated in the ESPN Outdoor Games in the tree-topping event. Lee, a veteran of many area logging competitions, is a former Western Washington logger. ESPN heard of his prowess, and invited him to the competition. Lee prides himself in his speed up and down a tree.
Whitman County Uniontown
Residents are gearing up for a townwide garage sale and flea market on Aug. 19. Nearly all the spaces at the community building have been taken by folks selling goods including antiques, furniture and collectibles.
IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries
The Veterans of Foreign Wars building, at the corner of College Avenue and Third Street, was auctioned and purchased by Maureen Howard of St. Maries and her daughter, Janelle Dunn of Pullman. Howard owns Main Street Antiques and Espresso. The women plan to remodel the 90-year-old building and make it available for commercial use.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Gail Peterson and the band Melt Down will perform during a benefit for the American Cancer Society. Peterson is a former big band singer and television entertainer. Pend Oreille Winery and Pend Oreille Brewery will provide refreshments. Tickets are $15 and are available at Eves Leaves, Java Adigio and Monarch Mountain Coffee.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The Airport Barbecue last weekend attracted more than 100 people. Youths and adults competed in the flour bag drop competition, in which a small paper bag was filled with flour and the “bombers” tried to hit a target near the runway while flying 300 feet above it. The event ended with an acrobatic demonstration flight.
Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene
Prospective high school sports officials need to attend today’s mandatory state rules clinic at 7 p.m. at Coeur d’Alene High School. Registration begins at 6:45 p.m. A business meeting will be held at 6 p.m. for volleyball officials. Latah County Juliaetta
Latah County’s Tire Amnesty sites in Juliaetta, Moscow, Deary, Genesee and Potlatch collected a total of 42,800 pounds of old tires. County residents could drop tires off without being charged on July 29. The tires will be recycled in Portland. Next year’s Tire Amnesty Day probably will be in June.
Shoshone County Wallace
Volunteers are needed to help with registration, shuttling people between the RV parking area and downtown during the Wallace High School/Our Lady of Lourdes Academy reunion this weekend. Top exhibitors at the Lincoln County Junior Fair last weekend were: outstanding exhibitor, Ashley Sharp; first runner-up, Kimberly Tangen; followed by Katelen Hass, Elisabeth Colson and Brian Wagner. The top exhibitors won cash in addition to their premium and grand championship money.
