Valley Districts’ Budgets Nearing Vote
Spokane Valley school boards are close to approving budgets for the 2000-2001 school year.
In all districts, increases in spending reflect the receipt of state funds to boost teacher salaries and lower class size. Budgets also allocate grant money awarded to the districts over the past year.
In Central Valley, grant funding will be used for programs focusing on after school instruction, all-day kindergarten, and behavioral and academic counseling for students who have been suspended.
Central Valley’s budget totals $72.2 million.
The Central Valley School Board will vote on adoption of its budget on Aug. 28 after listening to public comments at 6:30 p.m.
West Valley’s $24.6 million budget shows an increase in state funding for special and vocational education programs.
Close to $300,000 will be spent on increasing staff and equipment in both areas.
The West Valley School Board will hold a public hearing at noon on Aug. 23 before voting on the district budget.
East Valley’s $31.4 million budget remains stable, with the addition of a $44,000 state-funded safety grant.
The East Valley School Board is scheduled to vote on the district’s budget at its Aug. 29 meeting, which begins at 5:30 p.m.
Although the district already has held a public hearing, anyone interested in commenting on the budget can do so at the beginning of the Aug. 29 board meeting. Board members ask that those interested in speaking inform the superintendent’s office before Tuesday.
