Ewu’S Hansen, Maxwell Earn Big Sky Scholar-Athlete Award

Men’s basketball player Ryan Hansen and volleyball player Kim Maxwell have been honored as Eastern Washington University’s recipients of 1999-2000 Big Sky Conference scholar-athlete awards.

One senior male athlete and one senior female athlete from each conference school is honored.

Hansen, a graduate of Cascade High School in Leavenworth, Wash., finished with a 3.80 accumulative grade point average and received his physical education degree in the spring. He also led the EWU men, who shared the Big Sky’s regularseason title, by scoring 12.4 points per game.

An All-Big Sky selection and a two-time All-Academic pick, Hansen also was one of six NCAA Division I men’s basketball players to receive a $5,000 NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship.

Maxwell, a graduate of William Aberhart High School in Calgary, Alberta, had a 3.81 GPA as a biology major. She set a pair of school records with 1,381 assists in 1999 and 3,745 for her career. She earned AllBig Sky Conference honors and was selected to the GTE Academic All-District VIII second team.

Basketball

Point guard Christy Martin, a former starter for the Ferris High girls and a spring graduate of Walla Walla Community College, will join the women’s team at Cal State University Stanislaus in Turlock, Calif., this fall.

Fishing

Children ages 5-14 can learn how to fish at the Kids’ Klassic on the Spokane River in Riverfront Park on Saturday. The Washington Department of Fish and Game will stock a section of the river with rainbow trout. Register at the park on Saturday and receive a Zebco rod and reel and a T-shirt.

Football

Former Eastern Washington University star Jackie Kellogg, a defensive back for the Calgary Stampeders, was last week’s Canadian Football League defensive player of the week.

Kellogg made three crucial tackles to go with an interception as the Stampeders defeated the Toronto Argos.

Horseshoes

Anthony Patterson of Spokane won the juniors mixed Class B championship Aug. 4 in the 82nd annual World Horseshoe Pitching Tournament at Bismarck, N.D.

Patterson won his title by posting a 14-1 record while averaging 53.67 percent ringers.

More than 1,200 pitchers were competing for more than $128,000 in cash and trophies.

Swimming

Almost 50 swimmers representing a handful of regional clubs, including several from Spokane Area Swimming, make up the Inland Empire team that leaves Monday for United States Swimming’s Western Zone championships Tuesday through Saturday in Fresno, Calif.

Swimmers from 12 states will compete in one of three zone meets held nationwide.

Track and field

Ashley Ramos, senior class female athlete of the year at Wellpinit High and the runner-up in the 1,600 meters in the Washington State B track meet, has signed with the University of Mary in Bismarck, N.D.

The 2000 Youth Athlete of the Spokane tribe, Ramos will participate in cross country and track.

Volleyball

Anyone interested in officiating volleyball is invited to attend an introductory meeting tonight at 7 p.m. in Room 203 of the Gonzaga University Administration Building. No previous officiating experience is required.

The WIAA high school rules clinic for all coaches and referees is Thursday at 6:30 p.m. at Mt. Spokane High School. The National Training Team rules clinic for college coaches and officials will be Sunday at 9:30 a.m. at Gonzaga University’s Jepson Center.

Former Gonzaga Prep coach Steve Gillis has become an assistant coach at the University of Washington.

A Spokane native who graduated from Westmont College in 1985, Gillis coached at Whitworth College 1992-94 then took over at Gonzaga Prep in 1995. At UW, he will be in charge of the defense and will assist head coach Bill Neville with the administration of the program.

Holly Horn-Gotshalk, a Shadle Park High graduate who played at Oregon State University and University of Montana, has been hired as an assistant coach at Lewis & Clark College.

Pioneers head coach Michelle Peterson was a graduate assistant at Montana when Horn-Gotshalk transferred there as a sophomore. They have worked together at Grizzlies camps and both coached at the high-school level in Missoula.
