Adams County Othello
Faelela Mitchell is leading a group of friends in trying to keep the Christmas Festival of Lights alive. Last spring, the Chamber of Commerce announced it no longer had the resources to put up and maintain the holiday light display.
Ferry County Wauconda
Chris Wells is bicycling to Wauconda - from Wauconda, a 2,000-mile trip. Wells is riding here from Wauconda, Ill., to see what his hometown’s counterpart is like. The good folks of that other Wauconda gave him a big sendoff June 24. He is to hit Ferry County this week.
Grant County Moses Lake
A South Korean beef import company will move its American headquarters here from Michigan, providing 25 jobs. Korco Foods has purchased 26 acres to build a nearly 25,000-square-foot plant near Genie Industries. Three trucks carrying 40,000 pounds of beef each will travel from the plant to Seattle daily.
Lincoln County Wilbur
Replaced last year, the city water tower seems to be functioning fine. Four small rust spots on the interior were removed by city crews recently. The transmitter and dialer on the tower’s roof have been replaced. They were damaged in a lighting storm this summer. The town also is considering planting poplar trees near the sewer ponds, so effluent can be sprayed on the trees instead of flowing into Goose Creek.
Pend Oreille County Diamond Lake
The Water and Sewer District is seeking grant money for a study on future expansion. The district is rethinking its boundaries and the current and future water needs near them. The district has been considering fees for nonresidents who wish to hook up to water and sewer services here. Capacity needs to be studied before any promises are made.
Spokane County Spokane
The Through the Garden Gate tour of master gardener gardens on July 23 grossed $6,200 in ticket sales, plus other earnings for a total revenue of $7,300. The money will go to support the Plant Clinic and educational programs through the sponsoring Cooperative Extension.
Stevens County Colville
Richard Langford, Disabled Veterans Outreach Program specialist for the Colville Job Service Center, has been collecting used videotapes to distribute to vets. So far, his group has collected 300 tapes, which they will distribute to the state’s three veterans nursing facilities. Call (509) 685-2118.
Whitman County Almota
The port on the Snake River continues its efforts to recover from the grain spill in late July that dumped about 250,000 bushels into the complex after a concrete storage tank gave way. Salvage crews are cleaning up the site. The accident came at a bad time, since farmers are ready to deliver the grain they’ve harvested.
IDAHO
Benewah County St.Maries
The fifth annual quilt show presented by the Valley Piece Makers club will include 139 quilts made by members and friends. Quilt Show 2000 will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sept. 3 and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sept. 4 at the Heyburn Elementary School Gymnasium. Cost is $1.
Bonner County Sandpoint
Among new features at the County Fair this year are a second rodeo, a children’s activity room and a special horse show by Emerald Empire Horse Club. The fair will be Aug. 24-27 at the fairgrounds. Exhibits will be rearranged as floor space in the main exhibit hall was expanded, and can be viewed 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The second rodeo, on Sunday, begins at 1 p.m.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
The high school Badger Football organization is hoping its new fundraiser will become an annual event. Twenty teams of four will play nine holes of golf at Mirror Lake Golf Course Aug. 19. The Football Scramble Golf Tournament Football Fund-raiser will be followed by dinner. People, groups and businesses have sponsored holes. Call (208) 267-5314.
Kootenai Count Cataldo
The 150th annual Feast of Assumption will be celebrated by the Coeur d’Alene Tribe with a mass at 11 a.m., lunch at 1 p.m. and dancing at 3 p.m. today at the Cataldo Mission. Members of the tribe gather to celebrate their traditions and remember tribal members buried there. The Cataldo Mission, built from 1850 to 1853, is on the tribe’s homeland, but outside the reservation. It is Idaho’s oldest standing building.
Latah County Moscow
A volunteer since March with First Steps program, Laura Green, was the August Volunteer of the month. Gritman Medical Center’s First Steps volunteers help new mothers at the hospital and during the first few weeks at home. Green has seven children.
Shoshone County Wallace
The school board has changed its monthly meeting to 6 p.m. the second Monday of each month. The meetings are at the Silver Hill Middle School library in Osburn. The board approved the change during its July meeting.
MONTANA
Lincoln County Libby
A 22-year teacher with Libby’s public schools, Sandra Honeychurch, will be the Asa Wood principal, replacing Jackie Holzhauser. Honeychurch was a Libby Middle School teacher of math and language arts. Holzhauser had been approved this year to succeed Shirley Chase, who retired. Holzhauser has married and wants to move to Sandpoint with her new husband.
