State Crews Contain West Plains Fire

From Staff Reports

State Department of Natural Resources crews were mopping up a fire late Tuesday that burned about 35 acres of mostly agricultural land near Medical Lake.

About a half-acre of timber also burned in that fire, a DNR spokeswoman said. The early evening fire, which sent up huge columns of white smoke, was located near Thorpe and Brooks roads just north of Medical Lake and west of Fairchild Air Force Base.

Firefighters had about three-quarters of a mile contained by 9 p.m.

DNR crews were also cleaning up a fire that burned 3 acres of brush near Burroughs and Austin roads in North Spokane County on Wednesday afternoon. The causes of the fires are under investigation.
