‘Cops And Kids’ Set For Saturday

Compiled From Staff

The eighth annual “Cops and Kids” event featuring street rods, low-rider bikes, food and prizes happens on Saturday night.

Spokane Police Officer Gordon Grant, who has organized the event for the past six years, says the night is designed to bring teens and police officers together on common ground.

Several officers own their own rods and enjoy talking with anyone about them.

The event is also a time to discuss traffic and safety issues in a nonconfrontational setting.

The event runs from 8 p.m. to 11:30 p.m. in a large parking lot at the intersection of Washington and Riverside. The block of Riverside between Washington and Bernard will be closed for the night.

Last year, about 245 cars were on display. Prizes are given for several categories.

Raffle tickets for the grand prize cost $1, which goes to fund next year’s event.

This year’s grand prize is two tickets for the Fontana, Calif., Speedway’s NASCAR 400-Series Race 2001.

Refreshments include David’s Pizza, Blue Bell potato chips and Coca-Cola, all donated by merchants. The event is sponsored by the Police Department and several merchants, including Silver Lanes and Costco.

Everyone, not just cops and kids, is invited to attend.
