Othello

Charlotte Cramer recently opened a copy of Taste of Home magazine to find her picture and her recipe for Creamy Apricot Pie. Months earlier, the magazine had printed a plea for recipes from Washington using apricots. She sent several recipes, but forgot about her submission until she saw herself in the magazine just this month.

Ferry County

Curlew

The new “Blueprint Reading for Construction Trades” class at the Curlew Job Corps Center is a smashing success. Local contractor Ron Piekaar volunteered his time to teach the students the ins and outs of blueprints. After learning to read residential and light commercial construction plans, all agreed the class should be mandatory, as the Job Corps focuses on construction trades and turning out skilled workers.

Mattawa

An undetonated bomb was found near Mattawa last weekend. Deputies arrested Christopher R. Slegel, 18, after a call to the sheriff’s office advised someone had left a pipe bomb at the gravel pit. The Yakima Explosive Ordinance Disposal Unit detonated the bomb without incident.

Lincoln County

Creston

Three streets in town are under construction. Fourth Street, a well-traveled road, is being widened and gutters and catch basins are being installed. Third Street is also being paved and upgraded, as is a county road leading into town. All are being funded by grant money.

Pend Oreille County

Cusick

The Pend Oreille County Fair is under way. Today’s schedule includes the scarecrow building contest and Grange and Livestock show day. Dairy Day will be celebrated on Saturday. The rodeo gets under way at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, with an encore performance Sunday at 1:30 p.m.

Spokane

The Spokane Community Gardens organization is planning a fall harvest celebration for Sept. 24 from noon to 3 p.m. at Liberty Park. Fellow gardeners and volunteers are attending.

Stevens County

Colville

Colville’s brother-sister duo of Kelly and Kimberly Brown took no prisoners at the recent Kootenay Region swim championships in Trail, British Columbia. The duo seized gold medals in every event they entered. The Browns were responsible for eight of the team’s 14 gold medals. The entire Shark team stepped up to the challenge by bringing home 28 medals overall, with the youngest members of the team showing great promise.

Colfax

The descendants of Joseph C. and Elizabeth Gerlitz Leinweber met in Colfax recently to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the couple’s arrival to the United States from Russia. More than 140 family members attended and toured the area where the couple lived for three decades.

Plummer

Marve Bain recently sold the Plummer Quick Stop to Bert and Helen Harvey of Moscow. The Harveys have no immediate plans for changes but hope to install a canopy over the gas pumps in the future. The Harveys also own Mikey’s Gyros, a restaurant in Moscow.

Bonner County

Sandpoint

Melissa Booth, Priest Lake, and Marc Anderson, Clark Fork, were chosen as royalty of the 2000 Bonner County Fair. The competition, judged by Cheryl Cary and Bernice Wood, was held at the Sandpoint Church of the Nazarene. Last years’s queen, Niki Roberts, announced the 10 qualified candidates and the winners. The royal couple, both 4-H members for eight years, will appear in community events such as the Fourth of July parade, the Winter Carnival parade and the Bonner County Rodeo and will participate in 4-H events.

Bonners Ferry

The date for the annual 4-H Dog Show has been changed to Aug. 25 at 6 p.m. on the lawn at the fairgrounds. The date was changed to accommodate vacation schedules. Members of 4-H clubs will show dogs they have trained and groomed. Helen Juian will be the judge, and ribbons will be presented after the show.

Kootenai County

Farragut State Park

Frisbee golf, anyone? Farragut State Park is hosting a professional and amateur tournament this weekend. Entry fee is $10 for either the singles tournament Saturday or the pairs tournament Sunday. No experience is necessary. Proceeds go toward the purchase of professional chain-link baskets used to catch Frisbees. Registration starts at 10 a.m., games begin at 11 a.m. Putting and driving clinics will be held 9:30-10:45 a.m. both days. Frisbees will be available for $8 to $10. Directions to the course are available at the front park gate.

Juliaetta

The Idaho Department of Lands believes a fire that burned 900 acres near Juliaetta last week was started by a person. The agency is looking for anyone who might have information about it or a fire in Lapwai that started on Aug. 7. Anyone with information should call (208) 666-8618.

Mayor Ron Garitone accepted an appointment to the Association of Idaho Cities Legislative Committee for the upcoming session. The committee is responsible for setting the AIC legislative agenda.

Libby

The Liberated Wailing Wall performers, sponsored by Jews for Jesus of San Francisco, will present a concert at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Libby Assembly of God. The gospel group, originally formed in 1971, has traveled throughout the world and recorded nine albums so far. Everyone is welcome.
