Adams County Othello
The Peterson family is again flying its American flag high and proud. Ross Peterson raised his 37-foot flagpole on Flag Day 1976. A former Navy man, Peterson died in 1995. His flag became the family’s daily reminder of him. Last month, a windstorm snapped the pole. This week, Peterson’s son Garth raised a 57-foot pole topped with a bronze eagle to remind the family - and passers-by - of his father’s devotion to his country.
Ferry County Republic
County residents are reminded of today’s planned power outage. Under the Bonneville Power Administration plan, there was to be no power in Republic, Malo, Curlew, Danville, Wauconda, Job Corps and Bonaparte Lake areas from midnight to 5 a.m. The outage will let crews conduct transformer maintenance and replace line insulators.
Grant County Moses Lake
The City Council has agreed a new City Hall is needed, but the proposed $4.5 million price tag has caused some dissension. Councilman Chris Blessing says the city doesn’t need some of the perks the proposed brick building has to offer, such as a large basement storage space. Integrus Architecture of Spokane developed the plans.
Lincoln County Wilbur
Lincoln County Habitat for Humanity is racing to finish its second home. The group has been shooting for Aug. 30 as the dedication for Ben and Becky Peterson’s new home. Pend Oreille County Newport
Dr. Regan Andrade chose Pend Oreille County for its family atmosphere. She also wanted the $50,000 federal bonus for practicing medicine in a rural setting to help reduce her $250,000 student loan. Andrade has been practicing here for nine months and was recently told the money she was promised no longer exists. The local hospital district is considering picking up the tab for the bonus she never received.
Spokane County Spokane
The Waterford retirement community on the South Hill is putting on what its staff is calling a “cruise” with fun and games in the main lobby for four days starting on Tuesday. Stevens County Colville All are reminded of tonight’s fund-raiser auction and dance for two ailing youngsters. The proceeds will help pay medical bills for Lindsey Luiten and Eric Black. The fun starts at 8 p.m. at the Fort Colville Grange. The band Firecreek has donated its musical talents; Larry Enright of Cross M Auction Co. is also donating his services.
Whitman County Pullman
The Compton Union Building on Washington State University’s campus will be open 24 hours a day starting Monday. A campuswide survey has identified a need for a late-night gathering place for students.

Benewah County St. Maries

Community members and businesses volunteered time and materials to convert an area near the Priest Lake Museum into a nature garden.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
About 15 pet cats were snatched by a young cougar roaming the North Hill neighborhood, according to Greg Johnson of the Idaho Fish and Game Department. He said the cougar, which was only about 9 months old, was shot recently by Deputy Sheriff Kevin Hayes. For details, call IFG at (208) 267-7629.
Kootenai County Cataldo
The annual Mountain Man Rendezvous continues today and Sunday at the Cataldo Mission State Park. The park is turned into an encampment for mountain men and women and their survival lifestyle. Exhibits include spinning wool into yarn, flint-knapping, candle making, black powder rifles, tomahawk and knife throwing and black-smithing.
Latah County Troy
The $660,000 improvement project on Main Street is about halfway done, although it’s slightly behind schedule. Improvements include water and sewer line updates, new sidewalks, curbs, gutters and street lights. Shoshone County Kellogg The Silver Valley Board of Realtors holds an annual rummage sale to raise funds for local charitable causes. Lincoln County Troy
City efforts to help fight wildfires now include encouraging residents to voluntarily quit watering lawns from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. to ensure the water supply for area fire camps is adequate. The city also has sent David Norman, director of public works, with a six-person volunteer firefighting crew and two firetrucks to Darby, according to City Clerk Sandra Johnson.
