Customized Van Given To Sled-Accident Hero

From Staff

Tom Higgins was paralyzed from the neck down last winter when he saved a little boy from a sledding accident. On Saturday, the Spokane man received a customized van built to accommodate his injuries.

Thousands of people donated a total of $46,000 for the full-size vehicle with a drop floor, according to Daybreak Rotary of Spokane, which helped organize the fund-raiser.

The van will make it easier for Higgins, injured in January at Holmberg Park, to get to routine physical therapy sessions. The van was delivered to the former coach’s North Side home Saturday.
