WASHINGTON

Adams County Othello

A North Plains, Ore., development company has announced it will build an assisted living center here this spring. Assisted Living Communities has 11.5 acres at the corner of Seventh Avenue and Olympia to begin excavation in November. Phase I of the project includes a 48-unit center. The second phase will consist of a second 48-unit center, single-family homes and apartments. The deadline for Phase I is early summer 2001.

Ferry County Republic

The annual Ferry County fairgrounds work day begins at 9 a.m. today and goes until whenever the necessary jobs are finished. All who wish to help may bring gloves, tools and lunch. The fair board also needs trophy sponsors. A donation of $14 will buy a trophy for a deserving entrant.

Grant County Ephrata

County residents may want to cook their burgers until they’re well-done. A recall of hamburger from a Canadian meat packing plant has officials here issuing warnings. A strain of E. coli has contaminated nearly 6,000 pounds of beef from the plant. That beef was repackaged and distributed throughout the state. Health officials remind all to cook their burgers to 155 degrees to kill any bacteria. For information, call (509)754-6060.

Lincoln County Odessa

Kids here hope the warm weather holds out through the first few weeks of September. Although the local pool officially closes its full-time schedule on Friday, it will be open for after-school hours through Sept. 8. The main pool will be open from 4 to 5 p.m. weekdays for all, and 5 to 6 p.m. for adult swim. The wading and slide pools will be closed during this time. The entire complex will be closed on weekends starting Aug. 26.

Pend Oreille County Diamond Lake

The battle against Eurasian milfoil isn’t going as well as locals had hoped. A recent dive by scuba crews found significant new milfoil growths throughout many previously uninfected areas. Although this is bad news, the flip side is that aquatic herbicides work well against milfoil in the growing stage. The homeowners association hopes to treat at least 20 acres starting Sept. 10.

Spokane County Spokane

A huge collection of 18,000 perennials and houseplants will be sold on Sept. 9 at the annual plant sale by The Friends of Manito organization. The sale near the Gaiser Conservatory is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Members of the organization are allowed in early at 8 a.m. Money raised from the sale will go toward projects at Manito Park.

Stevens County Colville

Today is “Family Fun Day” at the Stevens County Historical Society Museum. The fun gets under way at 1:30 p.m. at the Keller Heritage Center. Family-oriented games with prizes will he held. The largest family present will win a cash prize, as will the child with the youngest or oldest grandparent present.

Whitman County Almota

The power is back on at the Almota grain terminal on the Snake River. But the port, which was shut down because an elevator collapsed and spilled 250,000 tons of grain several weeks ago, won’t be open for while yet. The operators are hoping to have the port back in action some time in September.

IDAHO

Bonner County Sandpoint

Attorneys Denise Woodburn, Jack Douglas, Sara Seaborg and Bryce Powell were unanimously approved as public defenders by the Bonner County commissioners. The $295,000 contract with the attorneys will run from this October to September of 2001. The fee will increase to $300,000 in 2002.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

The Idaho Department of Fish and Game has been tagging rainbow trout in the Kootenai River upstream from Bonners Ferry. If a tagged fish is caught, anglers are encouraged to record the tag number and color, where they caught the fish, if they kept or released it, and report it to the regional office in Coeur d’Alene for a $10 reward. The tags are a thin plastic tube about one inch long sticking out of the back of the fish just below the dorsal fin. For more information, call 769-1414.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

The North Idaho College Symphony has changed its name to The Coeur d’Alene Symphony Orchestra. A celebration is set for 4-6 p.m. today at the home of Jack and Sue Simpson, 1321 E. Lakeshore Drive. Along with music performed by symphony musicians throughout the event, wine, beverages and snacks will be served. Admission is $35, space is limited.

Latah County Moscow

Turning Point School moved to 1733 F St., across the street from the new aquatic center. Turning Point is a preschool program serving children 2-5 years old. It has a before- and after-kindergarten program and an after-school program. The school previously was located at the Paradise Hills Church of God, 512 Northwood St. Katrina Dafenbrock has owned the business for three years.

Shoshone County Kellogg

New students to the Kellogg School District need to bring their birth certificate and immunization records to registration. Registration dates have been set by the district as follows: Elementary students may register at either Pinehurst or Sunnyside from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily through Aug. 31; middle school students may register 1-3 p.m. Wednesday at the school; high school students should call the district at (208) 784-1371 to set an appointment with a counselor prior to registration.

Lincoln County Libby

The mammography services offered at St. John’s Lutheran Hospital recently received the highest possible rating for compliance, according to a letter Grant Crawford, imaging department manager, received from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services’ Food and Drug Administration. Lou Plough and Betty Textor provide the mammography services in the imaging department. Women interested in having a mammogram may call the hospital at (406) 293-0149
