The City Council passed an ordinance directing seven property owners to build or improve their sidewalks by Sept. 15. All but one of the property owners were notified more than a year ago of the need to improve the sidewalks. The city’s insurance carrier says sidewalks should comply with city rules and the Americans With Disabilities Act.

Christian Youth Ministries is selling cinder blocks for $2 each to build a youth center. The blocks are available at Eich’s Mercantile.

Daily block-laying parties are being held until Aug. 31 to finish the building before cold weather sets in.

Grant County

Coulee City

The Town Council is trying to negotiate a direct lease on its waterfront park with the Bureau of Reclamation. The town has a lease with the bureau and the state Parks and Recreation division, but city officials think working with the two entities provides too much red tape.

A teen prankster has been connected with the Aug. 5 flooding of a riverside resort. Authorities are considering charges against the youth after he allegedly stuck a paper napkin in the Deer Meadows Resort pool room’s emergency sprinkler system and lit it. The basement, office and golf pro shop were all flooded, with damage estimated at $5,000. The dishwasher, phone system and breaker box were also tampered with. Insurance should pay all damages.

Pend Oreille County

Mericom Corp. is hoping to put a 165-foot telecommunications tower next to the Newport High football field grandstands. The company hopes to build a 70-by-70-foot structure surrounded by fencing to house the tower, which will boost cell phone reception and Internet capability between Sandpoint and Spokane.

The Southside Senior Activity Center is putting on a High Tea event Sept. 15 at the Finch Arboretum. The event will cost $15 and is limited to 64 people. Gail Goeller will speak on redefining beauty as an aging woman.

The National Lentil Festival will be Friday and Saturday. It starts at 6 p.m. Friday on Main Street with a free lentil chili dinner. The parade starts at 11 a.m. Saturday on Grand Avenue.

Sarah Hughes won the first grand champion ribbon and Cody Parker won reserve grand champion ribbon in the 4-H Style Revue last week at the Benewah County Fair.

The Pend Oreille Arts Council will open its season with the Western Opera Theater performing Johann Strauss’ Die Fledermaus. The opera will be sung in English by the touring San Francisco Opera company at 7:30 p.m., Sept. 26, at the Panida Theater, 300 N. Bonners Ferry’s Meghan Sappington took first place in the bareback equitation and Amber Comer of Naples took first in the Junior Green horse event at the District 1 4-H Horse Show last weekend at the Bonner County Fairgrounds.

Brittany Wilson, 17, was injured in an accident July 13 that left her stranded in Belfast, Northern Ireland. Efforts to get her home cost her family $51,000. The family’s home in Coeur d’Alene is being sold to help repay money borrowed to get her home. An account at Washington Trust Bank has been set up for donations by family friend Jeff Guyett. Moscow Senior High School offers early registration for students. Students can pick up schedules and pay fees from 9-11 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. on certain days. Sophomores should register today, juniors on Wednesday and seniors on Thursday. School starts Aug. 30. Call the school at (208) 882-2591.

Camp Fire Girls and Boys need reliable volunteer leaders for the school year. Duties include three hours a week of assisting children in planning and carrying out programs, having regular meetings, maintaining records, providing transportation and encouraging participation. Locals are being trained for fire crews as fast as possible, according to National Forest Supervisor Bob Castaneda, but they have to qualify. Training is this week at Libby City Hall. Trainees must cover three miles with a 40-pound pack on their back, attend three days of classes and pass stress tests.
