Gambill Will Take On Moya In Third Round

Staff

Spokane’s Jan-Michael Gambill may have gotten a break Wednesday when fourth-seeded Alex Corretja was forced to retire because of illness in his second-round match at the Hamlet Cup tennis tournament.

Instead of Corretja, Gambill will face unseeded Carlos Moya in the third round. However, Gambill may have to play twice today because his scheduled doubles match and much of Wednesday’s other action was postponed by rain.

Gambill and his regular partner, fellow American Scott Humphries, will play Pablo Albano and Lucas Arnold of Argentina.

Defending champion Magnus Norman, the world’s second-ranked player, defeated Jonas Bjorkman 6-4, 6-1 in his second-round match.

Norman improved his career record against his fellow Swede to 3-1 despite going down 2-0 in the opening set. He then had two service breaks in the next three games.

In the only other matches played before the rain took over, Karol Kucera beat second-seeded Yevgeny Kafelnikov, the 1994 and 1995 Hamlet champion, 6-1, 6-3; and Fernando Meligeni rallied for a 3-6, 6-3, 6-2 victory over Albert Costa.

Moya was leading Corretja 7-5, 1-1 when Corretja was forced to retire with gastroenteritis.
