It’S Not Exactly Winter, But Chiefs Open Camp
The Spokane Chiefs opened their fall camp on Wednesday in the Arena and the team will begin scrimmaging today.
Today’s scrimmage times are 1:30 and 3 p.m. with Friday’s and Saturday’s scrimmages at 2 and 4. Sunday’s Red-White scrimmage is scheduled for 1 p.m.
Scrimmages are open to the public. Enter the Arena through the Chiefs main office on the southeast corner.
Boxing
David Bostice, a favorite at the Coeur d’Alene Casino’s House of Fury, has been added to tonight’s Summer Challenge card in Worley, Idaho.
The heavyweight from Los Angeles will put his 22-2-1 record against Terry Porter (13-7-2) of Eliane, Ariz., in a co-main event. The bout will be Bostice’s seventh at the casino. He’s won five by knockout, but lost last June. There are nine fights on tonight’s card, which features co-main event King Ipitan (19-1-1) of Nigeria vs. Zuri Lawrence (14-7-3) of New York.
Fight coordinator Moe Smith announced the to-be-announced opponents for the bouts. Among those are 154-pounder Cleveland Corder (18-1-0) of Boise, who will fight Ron Pasek of Edmonton, Alberta, and junior welterweight Steve Valdez of Denver, who will face Darrelle Sukerow of Edmonton.
Spokane welterweight Dewey Welliver will make his House of Fury debut against Kenya’s Johanus Musa. The former Rogers High student is 4-0 as a pro. Bosa Edwards, a two-time lightweight world champion from England, is bringing Mosa to Worley and will be signing autographs at the casino.
John Dixon has replaced Alrick Lassiter in the heavyweight fight against Davarryl Williamson of Aurora, Colo.
Golf
Jeff Coston, a perennial power in Northwest golf circles, pulled away to an easy victory in the Pacific Northwest Section Club Pro Championship at Kalispell, Mont., leaving Spokane’s Mark Gardner and Gary Lindeblad in his dust.
The defending section champion, Coston shot a final-round 64 for a 54-hole total of 201 to win $5,000. The Rosauers Open runner-up had a six-stroke margin. Gardner earned a trip to the Western championships by finishing at 213, one shot ahead of Lindeblad.
Football
Tyree Clowe, academically ineligible to play football at the University of Idaho, plans to attend Spokane Falls or Spokane Community College this fall.
Clowe, who redshirted last fall, would have contended for the starting spot at fullback had he remained eligible. This summer, he took and passed a course at Idaho.
Returning to the football field “does drive me,” Clowe said. “It (last year) was disappointing, but that gives me a lot more drive, too.”
