Museum Awarded Grant For Exhibit
The Eastern Washington State Historical Society/Cheney Cowles Museum has received an award from the National Endowment for the Humanities for exhibition planning and implementation.
The $242,947 award will be used for “People of the Rivers: Lifeways of the Northern Plateau,” one of several major exhibits that will be featured when the expanded museum opens in the fall of 2001.
National Endowment for the Humanities awards are the result of a review process designed to choose projects worthy of federal funding. The museum is one of only 18 museums and historical organizations in the nation that will receive NEH funds this year for exhibition planning and implementation. The Bank of America Foundation is the major corporate sponsor for this exhibit.
Jane Johnson, CEO of the museum, credited Larry Schoonover, director of programs and grants, and project director Lynn Pankonin, curator of American Indian Collections, for their work to secure the award.
The National Endowment for the Humanities cited “People of the Rivers” for its innovation and serving as a model for its authenticity and collaboration with the area’s tribes.
