Washtucna

Washtucna High School Principal Larry Thomas recently returned from a salmon fishing derby in Westport packing the grand prize. Not only did he hook a 30-pound king salmon, but he also caught his limit each of the event’s four days. His prize was $400 for the daily derby prize and good eats for months to come.

Ferry County

Republic

All ages are invited to a free rock concert in the Republic City Park on Saturday. Three Crosses Youth Outreach is sponsoring the event, which features a day full of music from Buddy Ruckus, O.C., Unhinged, Salt, Pure Joy and Shilo. The event runs from 1 to 11 p.m. and includes free prizes and other giveaways. For information, call (509) 775-2579. All proceeds will go toward building a skate park.

Moses Lake

The local Wal-Mart store has more in store for shoppers - groceries. The mega-retailer has announced the existing Moses Lake Wal-Mart will be remodeled into a “Supercenter.” This means groceries will be available.

Lincoln County

Harrington

There is hope for the Harrington School’s music program. The district says it’s getting closer to acquiring a teacher for fall. Five potential teachers have been interviewed.

Spokane County

The Spokane Soap Box Derby is moving from the Post Street hill on the city’s North Side to the Skipworth Road hill near Bowdish Junior High in the Spokane Valley. The next competition is planned Sept. 9 and 10.

Stevens County

Northeastern Washington Rural Resources is thrilled with a donation of firewood. The Little Pend Oreille Game Refuge provided enough wood for several needy families to keep warm this winter. The wood, says Supervisor of Energy Programs Barbara Wysocki, is available for families in crisis. Other types of energy assistance are available through rural resources by calling (509) 684-8421.

Whitman County

Colfax

The county seat is facing a budget shortfall this year and is considering cutting an officer from the police force and calling for a levy to support the Parks Department. The shortfall is expected to be around $42,000.

IDAHO

Benewah County

St. Maries

A logging truck load of firewood will be raffled by Hospice of Benewah County. Tickets will be sold at the organization’s booths during Paul Bunyan Days and the Benewah County Fair and are also available at the Hospice office, 702 College Ave.

Oldtown

The Score 10 Acrobat group competed in the Rainbow Connection 2000 National Finals July 24 in Las Vegas. The group took second place in their category and fifth place in overall high points.

Bonners Ferry

Life Travelers Kid’s Camp is an overnight workshop Saturday and Sunday for youths 6 to 16 who’ve lost a loved one. The $10 camp is at the University of Idaho Clark Fork Field Campus. Call (208) 265-1179.

Coeur d’Alene

A bed race will be held to benefit the Idaho Drug Free Youth organization. Coed teams of five build a decorated bed on wheels and race in elimination heats. Teams will parade their beds at 6 p.m. The best decorated bed will be awarded a prize along with the fastest team. Registration is $25. After Friday it’s $40. The University of Idaho’s College of Natural Resources is celebrating natural resources and its new name by having a photography contest. Photos must be matted and mounted 5-by-7 inches to 8-by-10 inches. Categories are general scenic/ landscape/ outdoors; natural resource use and management; natural resource recreation; students, faculty or field study setting; historical (pre-1995) pictures related to the categories listed; and black and white photos in the listed categories. There is no entry fee, and $2,000 in cash prizes will be awarded. Deadline is Sept. 29. For details, call (208) 885-6442 or (208) 885-6673.

Lookout Pass

Although traffic to the Hiawatha Trail is rerouted, the trail is open and unaffected by smoke from regional fires, according to officials of Lookout Associates. Confusion over the trail’s access has dramatically reduced the number of people using the trail.

Cabinet Backcountry Horsemen will hold its annual Glen Leckrone Steak Feed and Ride Saturday at the Oscar Miller Homestead on West Fisher. If the Forest Service restrictions on camping are not lifted, the ride will be canceled but the steak dinner will be held at Dave and Barb Neumann’s residence.
