Eastern Loses Top Offensive Tackle

Junior David Sherrod, a Uni- versity of Memphis transfer who had nailed down Eastern Washington University’s starting right offensive tackle position, has been lost for a minimum of six weeks because of an injured knee suffered in last week’s scrimmage.

Eastern head coach Paul Wulff said Sherrod suffered a dislocated kneecap, some ligament damage and a damaged tibia that will keep him on crutches for several more weeks.

In his place, Wulff has moved All-Big Sky Conference guard Luke Fritz to tackle. Junior Robert Horal, a letterman last year as a backup, will hold down the right guard position.

Matthews eligible

Anthony Matthews, a backup defensive back for Washington State University the past two seasons, had joined the EWU squad and is eligible for the seasonopener next week against Oregon State.

A 1997 graduate of Wilson High School in Tacoma, Matthews played in nine games for the Cougars. He had 15 career tackles with an interception, pass broken up, a blocked kick and one punt return for 14 yards.

Currently, Matthews is a second-unit cornerback for the Eagles, but he is expected to push senior Claude Jean-Baptiste on the right corner.

Another Eastern cornerback, Maurice Chambers, is ineligible to play this year. He sat out the 1999 season after playing 17 games in 1997 and 1998.

Scrimmage today

The second and final week of two-a-day practices will come to a close today when the Eagles have a game-style scrimmage in Woodward Stadium. The scrimmage begins at 3:30 p.m. It is open to the public and admission is free.
