Cougars Split With Alumnae
Washington State sophomore LaToya Harris totaled 27 kills and 19 digs to help the 2000 Cougars volleyball team split four games against a WSU alumnae squad before 1,243 fans at Beasley Coliseum on Friday.
The alumnae, coached by former WSU standout Sarah Silvernail, took the first game 18-16, before this year’s Cougars rallied to post a 15-6 win in the second game. The alumnae took the third game 15-13, but the Cougs won the finale 15-13.
Adrian Hankoff chipped in with 17 kills for WSU, while Kali Surplus had 57 assists and 15 digs.
Washington State opens the season by hosting the Les Schwab Cougar Challenge on Sept. 1-2 at Beasley.
Golf
Mead High School senior David Fern, last year’s state champion, shot a 2-over-par 74 during the first round of the Ping Phoenix Junior Championship at Arizona State’s Karsten Golf Course in Tempe.
Kevin Na of Diamond Bar, Calif., and Blake Brown of Atascadero, Calif., each carded 67s to grab the early lead.

The University of Montana women scored just 3 minutes into the season opener as the Grizzlies defeated Gonzaga University 2-0 at South Campus Field in Missoula.
Freshman goalkeeper Tara Curtis looked good in net for the losing Bulldogs, turning away seven shots in her first collegiate start.
