Valley Fire Backs Change In Annexation Law

Spokane Valley Fire District commissioners on Wednesday unanimously approved supporting a Grant County fire district’s court bid to change state law governing annexation.

Currently, if an unincorporated area accepts water or sewer from a city, the city may annex that area.

In the Grant County case, currently at the appeals court level, the fire district is asking that annexations always require a vote of the people, Valley Fire Chief Pat Humphries said.

Commissioners approved giving $5,000 and $10,000 to help with litigation costs.

Commissioners also considered joining the Econonic Development Council, a nonprofit group that helps bring new companies to the Spokane area.
