WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

The Wheat Land Communities Fair starts Wednesday and runs through next Sunday. Tickets are available at several local businesses. The Ritzville Community Parade is Saturday. Floats, cars, horses and other specialty units will strut through downtown. Register by Wednesday by calling (509) 659-0893.

Ferry County Wauconda

Chris Wells, of Wauconda, Ill., bicycled over 2,000 miles to visit the Washington town of the same name. His curiosity has been fulfilled - he was treated like a king by citizens of the Washington Wauconda. Wells, an artist, has taken off for Seattle and a plane ride back to his Wauconda, population 8,000.

Grant County Moses Lake

The City Council has reduced the speed limit along the Wheeler Corridor from 50 to 35 mph. The road through the agricultural and industrial area - especially the intersection of Wheeler and Road L - has been fraught with accidents. “Stop ahead” signs will be installed near Road L. There have been several accidents there in the past year.

Lincoln County Odessa

Police have identified three juveniles as persons of interest in the recent vandalism downtown. Police have eyewitness testimony from several folks who saw the kids, ages 7 to 11, using spray paint last week. Several buildings, trees, park restrooms, the school and the tourism kiosk were defaced, causing at least $300 in damage.

Pend Oreille County Usk

Sheriff’s deputies have taken several calls complaining of herds of from 15 to 100 buffalo trampling property. The buffalo belong to the Kalispel Tribe, which is rounding them up to return them to the reservation. The animals spent some time at the intersection of Kings Lake and Berry Road.

Spokane County Spokane

Road funding expert Dale Stedman will talk about potholes and traffic congestion during a noon luncheon at the Southside Senior Activity Center on Sept. 19. Reservations are needed. Call 535-0803.

Stevens County Colville

The city is in the process of purchasing a piece of land needed for parking. The fence on the downtown lot, owned by the Cox family, has come down. Parking commission funds in the amount of $120,000 will seal the deal. It has taken 16 years for the fund to build to its current $116,000. The Cox family will take $60,000 down and monthly payments of $727.

Whitman County Steptoe

County Jail inmates recently helped Randy and Sheryl Smith harvest beans and zucchini at their U-pick farm. The 300 pounds of produce they harvested will go to senior meal programs in Rosalia, Oakesdale and Colfax, and the Pullman Food Bank.

Benewah County Plummer

There’s a new garbage pickup schedule, says city clerk Donna Spier. Residents should have their trash ready for pickup by 7 a.m. Tuesdays on the west side of U.S. 95 and 7 a.m. Thursdays on the east side. Call city hall at (208) 686-1641.

Boundary County Bonners Ferry

Students attending District 101 schools return Sept. 5. Secretaries and principals are at school and students may register during office hours. Latah County Moscow

The Moscon XXII, the annual science fiction convention, continues today at the University Inn Best Western’s convention area in Moscow. Events include an art auction, panel discussions and the Masquerade Ball and costume competition. Tickets are $30 at the door, $15 for kids under 12, free for those under 6. Call (208) 882-3672.

Shoshone County Kellogg

A new addition, the 95 Cent Store, to the Silver Valley Appliance and Mercantile brings low-cost items such as party favors, clothing and housewares to town. Owners Tina and Carl Hojem teamed up with Ponnie Fueschsel to keep customers in the valley.

There will be a Babe Ruth re-organizational meeting at 7 p.m. Aug. 30 in the basement meeting room of the Lincoln County annex. Coaches need to bring any uniforms they may have.
