A-1 Division I

Lewiston Bengals

1999 record: 5-5

Coach: Emmett Dougherty

Years coaching, record: 4th, 2nd at Lewiston, 18-13

Starters, lettermen returning: 14, 24

Base offense; base defense: Spread, 40 nickel

Key players: Neil Litchfield, sr., 6-2, 200, quarterback; Dan Haines, sr., 6-5, 240, tight end/wide receiver; Mike Anderson, sr., 6-3, 200, wr/defensive back; Jim Schmidt, sr., 5-10, 185, linebacker; Matt Gower, sr., 5-10, 180, running back/lb; Mike Gower, sr., 5-10, 180, wr/lb; Jake Leachman, sr., 6-5, 250, offensive tackle.

Coach’s comments: “They’ve done everything they need to do to be competitive. Our skill kids are our strength. We can be pretty successful, but again, depth in a problem.”

Outlook: Lewiston will battle five Boise-area teams for three state berths. Two wild card berths also are available. The Bengals probably don’t have the depth to knock off defending champ Centennial, but they should more than hold their own with the others.
