Tennis Marathon Aids Charities
The third annual Medical Lake Tennis Marathon raised $3,300 for the town’s food bank and crisis center.
The Aug. 23 event attracted 107 participants.
Cardinals tennis coach Leroy Lemaster said the goal was to raise $3,000, so he was pleased. The marathon raised $2,600 last year and $3,200 in 1998, the marathon’s first year.
“It’s neat to see people who usually don’t play tennis out there for a community activity that raises money for people who need it,” Lemaster said. “A lot of these people you won’t see on the courts until next year at that time.”
Lemaster credited the sponsors and volunteers for the event’s success.
Another positive was that Medical Lake’s four tennis courts were resurfaced and ready two days before the event.
Josh Greene, a 1997 Medical Lake grad who played two years for Gonzaga University, won an airplane ride for winning the fast-serve contest. His serve was clocked at 114 mph.
Nancy Downey and Tom Smith teamed up to bring in the most pledges, more than $1,100.
