Nationwide Candlelight Vigil Planned For Child-Abuse Victims

Those who believe in prayer are invited by Covenant House staff, children, and friends to join in the candlelight vigil “Let Your Light Shine!”

The vigil is for children who are victims of abuse, drugs and the sex trade. These children need protection from those who take advantage of them and leave them lonely, scared, cold and tired.

Covenant House, a refuge for runaway and castaway children, has planned the national vigil in Times Square in New York City at 5:45 p.m (EST) on Thursday. Anyone on the West Coast may join the vigil by placing a lighted candle in a window at 2:45 p.m. Thursday and praying for the children.

Covenant House hopes the vigil will encourage kids on the street to seek refuge and learn to trust and hope again.

The Bible story of Cain and Abel will be performed in a modern-times comedy scenario by New Life Productions, an outreach of New Life Community Church.

“On the Air with Cain and Abel” portrays two brothers who never grew out of the sibling rivalry stage and get lost in a sea of pride and resentment. The brothers duel it out on the air waves as DJs for competing stations.

New Life Productions hopes the audience will realize the need for reconciliation with others and the need for change from within. Performances are at 7 p.m. Thursday through Dec. 11 and 2 p.m. next Saturday at the church, 6100 E. Hayden Ave. Tickets are $2. For more information, call (208) 687-3606.

“The Christmas Box” is a holiday story about an elderly widow whose mysterious past helps a young father discover what the first gift of Christmas was. The story is based on the New York best seller by Richard Paul Evans. Performers and music will be provided by Coeur d’Alene First Assembly of God Church members. Performances are set for 7 p.m. next Saturday, and 10:30 a.m. and 6 p.m. Dec. 10 at the church, 2200 N. Seventh St. For details, call (208) 667-5481.

Children may enjoy making wooden toys, decorations and presents for family members at the Faith Advent Workshop 2000. The family event includes singing, a soup dinner, and focusing on Christ for the holiday. Faith Presbyterian Church, 9485 Maple St., Hayden Lake, will sponsor the free event, which runs from 4 to 6 p.m. Dec. 3. Call (208) 772-5251.

Members of St. Mark’s Lutheran and Faith Presbyterian churches gather once a year at the church building they share for their annual Advent by Candlelight program.

A mutual group, Hand in Hand Women’s Fellowship, serves desserts to invited guests on festively decorated tables set for eight. The goal is to bring in the holiday season and to get to know members from both churches. Opera singing by Deanna Thornhill, desserts, fellowship and entertainment are included in the event, set next Saturday. Last year’s event drew 64 women. This year’s event is expected to host about 112.

The drama team at the Lutheran Church of the Master in Coeur d’Alene will present three performances of the drama “He is the King of Kings.” The performances are scheduled for 2 and 5 p.m. next Saturday and 2 p.m. Dec. 10.

Admission is free, but tickets are required. Tickets may be requested by calling the church at 765-1002. The church is located at 4800 N. Ramsey Road in Coeur d’Alene.
