What’s in a name? Stock gains for building materials firm USG Corp. when the name is Warren Buffet and he’s buying a 15 percent stake. USG shares jumped $4.44 _ almost 30 percent _ to $19.38 Monday on the news. The stock closed Friday at $18.63, up 31 cents. Shares of BFGoodrich climbed $2.94 to $36.88 Wednesday when the industrial products and aerospace firm said it’s selling its performance materials division for $1.4 billion. BFGoodrich closed the week at $36.50, down $1.38.

What’s not

Many retail stocks were hit hard this week, including Ann Taylor, which dropped $7.88 on Tuesday to $30. Analysts said markdowns will hurt the company’s profits and quarterly earnings. Shares continued to fall and closed Friday at $20.75. Shares of semiconductor packaging and testing company ChipPAC Inc. tumbled $4.44 to $2.94 Wednesday because of analysts’ perceived weaknesses in the industry. The stock closed Friday at $3.25, up 19 cents. And the country’s fourth-largest PC maker, Gateway, lost $10.50 to close at $19 when it warned of a weak fourth quarter on Thursday. It closed Friday at $19.12.
