The County Lines

WASHINGTON

Adams County Ritzville

The Ritzville Chamber of Commerce is looking for ideas on how to attract business. The group has printed a survey in the local newspaper to see what goods and services are needed here. Surveys need to be to the chamber office by Friday.

Ferry County Republic

The land and fencing has been donated, but money is still needed for the Forget-Me-Not Animal Shelter. Until a permanent home can be found, the shelter has been working on a limited basis through a local veterinarian and friends who keep abandoned and abused dogs and cats.

Grant County Coulee City

The food bank needs donations for Christmas, and the Almira/ Coulee-Hartline High School cheerleaders are helping. They’re baking and decorating several gingerbread houses to raffle at the Dec. 8 basketball game.

Lincoln County Davenport

The city has not approved a formal contract with the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Department for police protection. Deputies are patrolling the town despite the lack of paperwork. The City Council is unhappy at what it calls the open-ended use of reserves on weeknights, instead of just weekends. A proposed contract charges the city $2,500 per month for a full-time officer, plus $12.50 per hour for after-hours reserves. The sheriff’s department will cover Davenport for six months while the city hires a chief and at least two officers.

Pend Oreille County Metaline Falls

The design for the town’s new water filtration system was presented by Welch Comer & Associates of Coeur d’Alene. Called a “slow sand filtration system,” it’s relatively low tech, using a box of gravel and sand to strain out wastes before chlorination. Metaline Falls water has no known problems, but the state is mandating filtration.

Spokane County Spokane

Our Place Community Ministries has found a new home. The West Central outreach center for low-income families is moving from 1018 N. Elm to 1509 W. College, and is expected to open in its new location early next year. The purchase of the new building is being made possible with a $50,500 contribution by the city of Spokane using Community Development Block Grant funds.

Stevens County Chewelah

Getting to the ski hill will be easier than ever. Improvements to Flowery Trail Road should provide all-weather access to 49 Degrees North. Because the road is so much better, bus service will be available to the hill. Roundtrip service is $6 from Chewelah, $7 from Deer Park and $8 from Spokane. For information, call (509)935-6649, ext. 604.

Whitman County Colfax

A retirement reception for County Commissioner Nora Mae Keifer is scheduled from 2 to 6 p.m. Friday at the Hill-Ray Plaza in Colfax. Keifer is finishing her third term. Fellow Republican Gerald Finch will replace her in January.

IDAHO

Benewah County St. Maries

Flu vaccination clinics may be scheduled this week, according to Bev Katovich of Panhandle Health District. Shots were given last week to high-risk clients, but a shortage of vaccine has caused a delay in shots for everyone. To make an appointment, call the health district at (208) 245-4556.

Bonner County Sandpoint

North Idaho Chorale, an amateur group, will give two free Christmas concerts at 7 p.m. Saturday at the Gardenia Center and Sunday at the Lutheran Church.

Kootenai County Coeur d’Alene

Kootenai Humane Society volunteers will give an educational presentation to Hayden Meadows 5th grade students at 2 and 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The presentation will feature puppies available for adoption and information about the shelter, spaying and neutering, and what can be done to help animals.

Latah County Moscow

The local Kentucky Fried Chicken will begin selling Taco Bell menu items along with its regular fast food sometime in January. CLD, a Taco Bell franchise, purchased the business and building in September from Tom Flowers.

Shoshone County Wallace

The new Shoshone County Sheriff, Chuck Reynalds, formed a detectives division with Lt. Mitch Alexander as the head of it. Deputy Kirk Kelso will assist Alexander. The canine narcotics unit was cut to afford the new division. Corporal John Koziuk, who handled the canine unit, was reassigned to the patrol division.

MONTANA
