Churches Offer Advent Worship Services, Programs
Advent is upon us as we move closer to the celebration of Christmas. Several North Side churches are planning weekly Advent worship services, dramas or other events to prepare for the holiday.
Prince of Peace Lutheran Church has begun offering weekly Advent worship services, beginning at 7 p.m. each Wednesday until Christmas. The church is located at 8441 N. Indian Trail Road.
Salem Lutheran Church, 1428 W. Broadway, will put on a soup supper at 6 p.m. before its weekly services at 7 p.m. each Wednesday during Advent.
Midweek Advent worship services also will begin at 7 p.m. each Wednesday at Trinity Lutheran Church, 4704 N. Wall. Holy Cross Lutheran Church, 7307 N. Nevada, will hold two worship services each Wednesday during Advent. Worship will begin at noon and 7 p.m.
The children of Covenant United Methodist Church will present an Advent program called “No Ordinary Night” at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. All are welcome to attend. The church is located at 15515 N. Gleneden Drive.
The choir of Whitworth Presbyterian Church will perform its Christmas cantata “A Festival of Lessons and Carols” at 7 p.m. Sunday. Dessert will follow the performance.
The church is located at 312 W. Hawthorne Road.
Teenagers at the First Church of the Nazarene will present performances of their Christmas drama “A Loan for Christmas” on Sunday. The performances, which detail the story of a bank robbery gone wrong, will take place during the 9:30 and 11:30 a.m. worship services.

St. Andrew’s Episcopal Church will host an Advent quiet day Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. The morning will be filled with a worship service, meditation and silence. All are welcome to attend, and there is no charge.

Students of Gonzaga Prep will present a performance of “Lessons and Carols” Monday at the Cathedral of Our Lady of Lourdes, 1115 W. Riverside. The program, a combination of liturgical readings and music celebrating the Advent season, will begin at 7:30 p.m. A reception will follow the performance at the Masonic Temple across the street from the Cathedral. The reception and performance are free.
Gonzaga University will perform its annual Christmas candlelight concert at 8 p.m. Friday and Saturday at St. Aloysius Church on the edge of the Gonzaga campus. The performances will feature the Gonzaga University choir, women’s chorus and brass ensemble. The program will include the Christmas narrative and Christmas music dating from the middle ages to the present.
Tickets are $10 for adults and $7 for seniors in advance, available through G&B Select-A-Seat locations or by calling 325-SEAT. Admission at the door is $13 for adults and $10 for seniors.
New pastor at North Hill Christian
The Rev. Sandra Missick has been selected as the new pastor at North Hill Christian Church. 4620 N. Post. She was ordained a minister in 1989 after receiving her master of divinity degree from Christian Theological Seminary in Indiana. Missick has previously served congregations in Indiana, North Carolina and Pennsylvania. She assumed her new position at North Hill on Friday.
Concert at Calvary Chapel
Musician Jim Cole will perform in concert at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Calvary Chapel, 511 W. Hastings Road. The concert is free, and all are welcome.
Joyful concert Friday
The local inspirational group “Joyful Noise” will perform in concert Friday at 7 p.m. at Kaufer’s Bookstore, 907 W. Boone. The suggested donation for the event is a can of food for the food bank.
