Web video: More scenes of Susie gushing over her new Barbie doll and Johnny trying out his new scooter will find their way onto the World Wide Web this holiday season.

The spread of broadband-speed Internet connections and the introduction of inexpensive software that enables amateurs to edit videos with ease have set the stage for strong growth of Web video.

Sales of “Webcams” underscore how rapid that growth is expected to be: sales are projected to jump from 5 million units this year to 17 million in 2002.

* Combating counterfeiting: Major manufacturers lose billions each year to counterfeiters who pump bogus goods into the market.

But technological advances could give victims of such counterfeiting a new weapon to combat it. Digital fingerprints can be secretly applied to the fabric of a sneaker, the label of a garment, or the packaging of a golf ball.
