* Let’s get creative. Dig out those poems and short stories you’ve written and always thought you’d like to see published. Our Generation announces it 10th annual Get Creative contest for teens.

Send us your best poems and short stories. Entries must be received by Dec. 31. The members of Our Generation will pick the best entries and print them in January. Winners get an Our Generation T-shirt.

Here are the rules:

1. You must be between 13 and 19 years of age.

2. Entries can be poems or short stories of no more than 1,000 words. You also may submit artwork (yours or a friend’s) to accompany your piece.

3. No more than two entries per person.

4. Send a copy of your work to The Spokesman-Review, 999 W. Riverside Ave., Spokane, Wash., 99201. Or you can submit your work via the fax or e-mail address listed at the bottom of the page. Be sure to include your full name, age, school, address and phone number. Entries will not be returned.

* Learn to protect yourself. The Spokane Parks and Recreation Department is offering four self-defense classes for teens in January. Classes include kickboxing, karate, kendo (Japanese fencing) and self-protection. Costs, dates, times and places vary. A limited number of partial scholarships is available. Call 625-6200 for more details.

* More chances to be creative. Students in grades 4 through 12 and college students can take part in the annual Eastern Washington University Black History Month Essay Contest.

Winners will get cash and be honored at the annual Black History Month Banquet at Eastern on Feb. 10.

Essays will be judged on originality, creativity, grammar, neatness and relevance. The contest deadline is Jan. 22. Submissions should be send to EWU, AAEP Essay Contest Committee, 216 ISL, Cheney, Wash., 99004.
