Winter Hawks Hand Spokane Its First Shutout Defeat Of Season
The Winter Hawks did to Spokane what no team before them had done this season… kept the Chiefs off the scoreboard.
Marcel Hossa’s power-play goal at the 3:28 mark of the third period sparked Portland to a 1-0 Western Hockey League victory over the Chiefs on Sunday at The Rose Garden.
Josh Olson and Jesse Ferguson assisted on Hossa’s 11th goal of the year.
It snapped a 15-game winless streak for the Winter Hawks against Spokane, dating back to Feb. 9, 1999.
Portland improved to 15-8-3-2 on the season, while the Chiefs fell to 15-10-4-1. Spokane was 13-0-2 in the 15-game streak vs. Portland.
It is just the second time this year that the Chiefs have dropped back-to-back games.
It was also the second time in Winter Hawks history that they won a 1-0 game. The first time was two weeks ago on Nov. 26 when they blanked Regina.
Spokane was 0 of 4 on the power play, while Portland was 1 of 4. Portland goalie Lanny Ramage made 33 saves.
