Jewell Scores 25 Points To Help Explosive Central Valley Lift Off
A few things come to mind to describe Tuesday’s performance by the Central Valley High girls basketball team in its rout of Gonzaga Prep.
Most are morbid, the rest have to do with explosives and rocket ships.
Just like the Bears, there’s always a choice.
CV (3-0) scored 71 points in the final three quarters to roll past what will be - but only occasionally was - a good G-Prep (3-1) team 82-63.
“They’re so explosive,” Bullpups coach Mike Arte said. “Especially if you turn it over in press break, you don’t have a chance. They have five weapons. They’re so difficult to guard.”
CV put four players in double figures in the Greater Spokane League game, led by Raeanna Jewell’s 25 points.
Point guard Jayme Heinen and first sub Caitlin Courchaine had 16 each.
That more than offset an impressive 31-point performance by Prep newcomer Alisa Lewis, who dominated the game at times.
CV scored 29 points after Prep’s 24 turnovers, 12 in the second quarter and nine in the third.
“That’s the object of our press,” CV coach Dale Poffenroth said. “It’s a wear factor.”
“We panicked,” Arte said. “That’s a very experienced team. They’ve played in front of large crowds in big games and we haven’t.”
The Bullpups actually built a 10-point lead when Lewis started the second quarter with a basket. Lewis had eight straight points as Prep used a 10-0 run for a 17-10 lead.
“They came to play,” Poffenroth said. “Look at the defense they played. We kept telling our kids they were trying to set up (the offense) too low.”
But when Prep started to tire a bit against CV’s relentless press and fouls built up, Jewell took control.
Heinen hit consecutive 3s - and turned the second one into a fourpoint play - to tie the game at 26. And after three quick Prep points, the Bears closed the half out with a 15-2 run for a 30-point quarter and 41-31 lead. Jewell scored 12 points in 2 minutes, 50 seconds.
“She took off, like she can,” Poffenroth said. “She took over.”
Jewell, who had a subpar shooting night in her last outing, attempted one shot in the first quarter, then she started driving to the basket.
“There is so much expected of us, this was a really big game,” Jewell said. “We all decided we should pick it up. When I got the ball I drove to the hole. That always picks me up. We took off.”
An 11-0 surge in 1:34 late in the third quarter, keyed by a Jewell 3 and back-to-back 3s from Courchaine, made it 61-39.
Prep was without one starter, Lauren Umbdenstock, who was in an auto accident along with teammate Juliann Laney on Saturday after practice. Laney, who started the game 19 points shy of the school scoring record, was less than full strength. She was held to eight points though she had 10 assists and nine rebounds. Umbdenstock was on the bench in street clothes.
