NEW FACES:

The following people have been accepted for membership in the Spokane County Medical Society:

Dr. Michael R. Leachman has joined Eye Consultants in the practice of ophthalmology. He graduated from UTHSCSA in 1994 and completed an internship and residency at Jones Eye Institute in 1999.

Dr. Lynn Lagerquist has joined the Rockwood Clinic in the practice of endocrinology. A 1969 graduate of Yale University, he completed an internship and residency at University Hospital in 1972. He also completed a fellowship at University Hospital in 1974.

Dr. Robert A. Kuwik has begun the practice of psychiatry at Spokane Mental Health. He graduated from State University at Buffalo in 1972. Kuwik completed an internship at Mt. Aubern Hospital in 1973 and a residency at Albany Medical Center in 1976.

Dr. Tamara B. Grim has joined the Rockwood Clinic in the practice of family medicine. She graduated from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1993 and completed an internship and residency at St. Anthony Hospital in 1996.

Dr. Craig M. Bone has joined Spokane Orthopaedic & Fracture Clinic in the practice of orthopaedic surgery. A 1990 graduate of the University of Washington School of Medicine, he completed an internship in 1991 and a residency in 1997 at the William Beaumont Army Medical Center. He also completed a fellowship at UCSD School of Medicine this year.

Dr. Margaret J. Haddon has joined Spokane Radiology Consultants in the practice of diagnostic radiology. She graduated from Chicago Medical School in 1984. She completed an internship and residency at the Mt. Sinai Medical Center in 1987 and an additional residency at the University of Connecticut in 1988. She also completed a fellowship at Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh in 1990 and Oregon Health Sciences University in 1991.

ELECTED:

Jim Mahoney has been elected president of the board of the Esther Corrigan Law Unit. Other officers include: Vice president, Irene Berg, registered parliamentarian and national parliamentarian U.S. Daughters of 1812; Anne Lack, secretary and immediate past president of the General Federation of Women’s Clubs; Joan Rivers, treasurer and past president of Jane Jefferson Democratic Club. Directors include Jimmy Sirmans, immediate past president of Esther Corrigan Law Unit and current president of the board of directors of Martin Lutheran King Jr. Family Outreach Center. Don Moeller, parliamentarian Spokane City Council, continues as educational program chair.

KUDOS

Pat Murphy, owner of Home Environments, 6909 N. Division, has received the top customer service award from Coleman Spas Co. The award is presented to one dealer out of the company’s nationwide network of 300 retail dealers. The Highest Customer Service Satisfaction Award is based on new owner surveys and a dealer rating by Coleman. Home Environments also received a Gold Award for its sales in the year 2000.

Jen Barnes, a cosmetology student from the Glenn Dow Academy of Hair Design, won first place in the women’s haircutting competition for students and professionals at the Inland Northwest Cosmetology Association Hair Show. Barnes currently works as a receptionist for Supercuts at 14109 E. Sprague. More than 30 students competed in the women’s haircutting category. Barnes will complete cosmetology school in January and become a full-time stylist for Supercuts at 1235 N. Liberty Lake Road in Liberty Lake.

Washington State University music professor Gregory Yasinitsky has been chosen to receive the Commission Project of New York’s inaugural Washington state composer-in-residence award. He is the first West Coast composer to be recognized by the organization, which sponsors composer-in-residence programs in several Eastern and Midwestern cities. Yasinitsky is in residence during the 2000-01 academic year at Clarkston (Wash.) High School, where he will work with music teacher Fred Dole. Yasinitsky will be writing music for various CHS ensembles, including the concert band, wind ensemble, jazz band, choir and jazz choir. Yasinitsky, who is coordinator of jazz studies at WSU, joined the faculty in 1982.

Dale Abendroth, an assistant professor at Gonzaga University, has received a Nurse Excellence in Education Award from Sigma Theta Tau International, the honor society of nursing, Delta Chi Chapter-at-Large.

Jennifer Balauro and Joan Reeser, both clerks with the Spokane Regional Health District, have received the Women, Infants and Children Employee Individual Excellence Award. Balauro was cited as “an excellent clerk with awesome, positive attributes,” while Reeser was commended for being “professional, courteous, prompt, organized, communicative and always goes the extra mile at work.” Both women were nominated for the award by fellow employees.
