Lc Spoils Homecoming Timberwolves Edge Post Falls
The Post Falls boys basketball team wanted to make head coach Dave Stockwell’s first return visit to Lake City high school a memorable one.
And while the Trojans’ 44-39 Border League loss to the host Timberwolves Friday was not the result they had hoped for, Post Falls sure made it interesting for the estimated 700 fans.
Stockwell, who had guided a highly successful girls program at Lake City until resigning three years ago, brought his Trojans (0-5, 0-5 Border League) into “The Den” still searching for their first win. And while they dropped their fifth straight to the taller, more physical Timberwolves, they made a battle out of it.
Lake City (5-2, 4-1) jumped out to a 10-4 lead midway through the first quarter thanks to a decided advantage on the boards.
The Timberwolves outrebounded the Trojans 11-6 and did a good job of limiting Post Falls to just one shot on each of its possessions in the game’s opening minutes. The Trojans did not record their first field goal until junior Greg Quesnell hit a 3-pointer with 2:26 left.
But after two of Lake City’s big men, juniors Matt Dlouhy and Matt Stern, picked up their second fouls in the quarter, the Trojans regrouped.
A second 3-pointer by Quesnell brought the Trojans to within 12-10 as the first quarter ended.
The second quarter mirrored the first as Lake City increased its lead to 17-10 and stretched it to 24-16 at the half.
Post Falls was able to stay close despite atrocious first-half shooting. The Trojans connected on just 4 of 22 field-goal attempts.
“We didn’t shoot well the whole game,” Stockwell said. “We have to work on that. But our goal was defense tonight and this was the first game out of five that I thought we put together four quarters. Our offense is still lagging behind.”
The Trojans defense did a pretty good number on Dlouhy, one of Lake City’s main offensive threats. After spending much of the first half on the bench due to fouls, Dlouhy scored just three second-half points, all of them from the free-throw line.
Nonetheless, Lake City was just too big for the smaller Trojans. The Timberwolves’ inside duo of Stern and junior Nick Pilon combined for 21 points and 14 rebounds. Ten of their points came in the third quarter when Lake City held its biggest lead at 35-22.
“Their size … I mean we’re just a bunch of skinny kids,” Stockwell said. “But as the game wore on, I thought we did a good job of keeping them off the glass.”
The Trojans, outrebounding Lake City 9-3 in the fourth quarter, came charging back, outscoring the Timberwolves 13-6 over the next 4 minutes. Led by junior Steve Ward’s eight points and five rebounds during that stretch, Post Falls came to within four points at 41-37 with 41 seconds left.
But a Post Falls turnover and three Lake City free throws sealed the win for the Timberwolves.
“The ball was just not going in the hole for us tonight,” Ward said. “About halftime, it clicked that we could win, but we had dug ourselves such a big hole in the first half.”
And while Lake City (5-2, 4-1) got the win, coach Jim Winger said it was not one of the Timberwolves’ better performances.
“It was a pretty lethargic effort,” he said. “I just thought we looked like we thought it was going to be handed to us. We thought it was going to be a stroll in the park.”
Pilon led Lake City with 11 points and seven rebounds, while Stern had 10 points and seven boards.
Ward finished with a game-high 15 points. Junior Issac Barnhardt grabbed 10 rebounds for the Trojans.
