Christmas Fund 2000 Third-Graders Thrilled With Giving

The third grade class at Brentwood Elementary School raised an incredible $238.61 for The Spokesman-Review Christmas Fund. “My students far surpassed my expectations, and they were thrilled to see our grand total,” wrote their teacher, Debra McGill.

But even more wonderful than that total were their letters:

“I hope you’ve raised enough money for all of those people out in the world who need food and money,” Myranda wrote.

Other gifts in Monday’s mail included one from the women who attended the annual Underwood/Altringer Girls Gift Exchange, who donated $80, as did the Moylan family, in memory of their parents, Bud and Lillian Moylan, brother Bud Moylan Jr., and Aunt Myrtle (Moylan) Grende.

Gifts of $75 came from Mr. and Mrs. Flory, 12402 E. 19th; R.K and Eva Akers, 9808 N. Comanche; Donald and Eleanor Limmer, Liberty Lake; and an anonymous donor in memory of her grandson Danny, husband Lloyd, and her parents.

Keith Taylor, 12606 E. Willowcrest, donated $65. There was an anonymous gift of $60, with this note: “Thank God Spokane is the kind of place where we consider our fellow man, and are willing to give, if only a small amount, to brighten someone else’s holiday.”

The Cub Scouts of Pack 171 in the Woodridge area and their families donated $51.

Gifts of $50 came from Mr. and Mrs. George C. Schroeder, 5205 S. Cree Drive; Michael and Debra Dahl, 11001 E. Main; Bob and Lois Banta, 14406 N. Fairview Drive; Bill Kaiserman, Spokane, in memory of his best friend and fishing buddy, Bob Powell; and Darrell and Betty L. Howry, 4606 E. Sixth, “in memory of my very precious mother who passed away Jan. 27, 1999. She loved Christmas and she didn’t like to see children go without.”

Daniel and Traci Melka, Mead, also donated $50, as did Barbara Benner, 15407 W. Tepee; Russell and Helen Inman, 5018 N. Bannen Road; John and Laura Odette, 8603 E. Mansfield; Mary Green, 8424 N. Nevada, and the Anderson family, Nine Mile Falls, “in memory of my father, John Hummer, who raised 12 healthy children. There were times when we needed assistance and we thank God for people like you who were so kind to us.”

Michael Almond, 15514 N. Fircrest Circle, donated $50, with this note: “Being blessed with a healthy, excited 6-year-old daughter, we hate to think of any child doing without. This is in memory of Richard Wise, a great father and grandfather.”

Other $50 gifts came from Bill and Teri Gross, 5328 N. Adams, in memory of their grandmother Sadie; Ruth Lambert, 2514 E. 59th Lane; Helene Taylor, 1801 E. Upriver Drive; Betty Kitley, 2311 W. 16th; Pat and Anna Sheehan, 7117 N. Drumheller; Rex and Dorothy MacDonald, 6737 N. Greenwood Blvd.; Marjorie R. Wachter, 4617 N. Elton; and Karen Snow, 3118 W. Glass, who wrote she had an added inspiration to give this year: “As I sat down at the computer tonight to compose this letter, a major winter storm was raging outside. I heard the roar of a snow blower and looked out the window. My neighbor was clearing my driveway for me! It is for his act of kindness that I enclose a check for $50. God bless and happy holidays!”

Greystone Lane, in memory of Gene Wolfe; Curt, Mary Jo, Curt, Colleen and Bill Lorenz, Chattaroy; Don and Polly; Jose and Anna Maria Cepeda, 7312 N. Entiat Court; William Johnson, 1227 E. 30th; Brent and Jay Hoogner, 315 W. 37th; Gwen Bowell 1216 N. Superior; Ken and Linda Leyde, 9615 Woodridge Drive; Scott and Kristin Haynes, Colbert, Wash.; Neal and Joann Skaufel, Veradale, for Gayle Engle; and Michael and Eileen Kain, 29 E. 14th.

There were nine anonymous gifts of $50, including one in appreciation for Lavonne Gehret; one in honor of their five children and eight grandchildren; one from “Kaiser union workers who feel very fortunate to be back at Trentwood working;” and one in memory of her son, Jeremy.

There were two anonymous gifts of $45, one in memory of Betty Rutter, and another in thanks for Larry Sunderland.

Those giving $40 were Ken and Lisa Werner, 4119 E. 21st; and an anonymous donor.

Max, 12, and Sam Shellabarger, 10, Cheney, donated the $33.80 they earned from recycling cans, with this note: “Weekly, my brother and I go collecting cans from our neighbors and relatives. We collect the money and save it until Christmastime. We then donate it to you. … My brother and I feel very fortunate to never go without and hope we can help those in need.”

Jill Beth, Veradale, donated $35, as did Jacquita and Andrew Leaming Sr., 4229 E. 29th; and Donald Fairburn, W. 920 Bellwood Drive.

Gifts of $30 came from Mr. and Mrs. Harvey Porter, 1422 E. 34th; Karla and John Dahl, 3918 E. Liberty, “in memory of Troy `boy,’ from his cousins in Spokane;” Walt and Betty Knowles, 1309 N. Evergreen Road; George and Patty Atkinson, 5520 N. Belt, with, “Thank you for providing a way for the fortunate to give to the less fortunate.”

Those donating $25 were the Frampton Living Trust; Charles Heitman, 3717 E. Howard and Margaret Sullivan, 3309 W. Francis; Tom and Ann Shaw, 25 E. Regina; Ann Carey and Patty Rabel, in memory of their dad, Ken Rabel; Patricia A. Sexton, Fairfield; Marjie Livers, 911 E. Beacon; Steve and Amy Hawk, 4109 E. 35th; and Randy and Sue Young, 2326 Coeur d’Alene.

There were nine anonymous gifts of $25, including one given in memory of Kathy Bly; one “in honor of Christ’s birthday;” one in memory of Greg Sworde, and one “in memory of my Grandmother Nanie.”
