Adams County Ritzville
Donations are still rolling in for the American Legion Hall’s new roof. The hall is used by the Lions Club, which is in charge of fund-raising and construction. Only $1,687 is needed for the goal of $50,000.
Ferry County Republic
The Kid CONNECTIONS group’s annual party is today at 2:30 p.m. at the Parish Hall. Activities include making paper, creating ornaments and learning about personal safety. Snacks are included. Kids 5 to 13 are welcome. Call (509) 775-3331.
Grant County Moses Lake
An embezzlement loss of $1.2 million hasn’t slowed the Ziggy’s project here. The property deal has nearly closed and the Spokane home-improvement company has finished land improvements such as gutters, curbs and sidewalks. The next step is to submit building plans to the city. The project has been in the works for two years.
Lincoln County Keller Ferry
The county Planning Commission has approved a 67-lot subdivision near here. Developer Gary Brown is the driving force behind Roosevelt View Subdivision. There are a few conditions. Fire personnel must be able to access the water system and any well dug must be 1,000 feet from a dump site. Brown says no livestock, trailers or mobile homes will be allowed, and the smallest single-story home allowed is 1,800 square feet.
Pend Oreille County Usk
The Kalispel Tribe is readying for the Dec. 26 opening of the Northern Quest Casino on Hayford Road near Airway Heights. The tribe purchased the land in 1993 for the 59,497-square-foot casino. Casino income will fund the tribe’s Camas Institute educational facility, as well as housing projects, an interpretive center and scholarships to tribal members.
Spokane County Deer Park
Effective the week of Jan. 2, the Deer Park branch library will close an hour later on Saturdays, expanding the schedule to 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Hours for the rest of the week will stay the same: Monday and Tuesday, 11 a.m.-8 p.m.; Wednesday and Thursday, 10 a.m.-6 p.m. The library is closed Fridays and Sundays.
Stevens County Colville
Auditor Tim Gray says I-695, the license tab initiative, will cost the county $1 million next year. The 2001 budget picture is especially grim when criminal justice costs are figured in, he says.
Whitman County Pullman
The Fire Department is urging residents to adopt a fire hydrant to ensure that it is visible in the snow. If there is a hydrant near your home, make sure there is always 3 feet of clearance around it and that it’s visible from 50 feet in either direction. IDAHO
Benewah County St. Maries Betty Furth’s home was burglarized more than two years ago and some of her personal checks were stolen. Recently some of those checks have been cashed and used to purchase items. Several businesses recorded the transactions on videotape and a man, who had a book of the checks, was arrested in Spokane last month. Officers say at least three women are involved, too.
Bonner County Sandpoint
About 400 students participated in a written and oral math competition recently. The event was run entirely by students, who competed in teams. Medals and trophies were awarded. Superintendent Roy Rummler said it was great to see students so serious about math and demonstrating their abilities by running the program.
Boundary County Bonners Ferry
Angela Tucker’s “First Day of Dance,” a photo of her daughter, Aubrey, 4, made the finals of the International Library of Photography contest. The photo will be in the ILP’s publication “Yearning For Yesterday.” Tucker has a chance to win a $10,000 grand prize, to be awarded in the spring.
Kootenai County Post Falls
The Post Falls High School cheerleaders, Lake City High School Youth Volunteers and the Coeur d’Alene High School choir will recycle trees to raise money and for energy conservation. Trees may be left at the schools between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. Jan. 6 for $2 or they may be picked up for $5. Latah County Moscow
The Planning and Zoning Commission on Wednesday granted a three-year permit to the Palouse Ice Rink Association for a temporary fairground facility to open in March. A permanent building won’t be allowed until the rink has had several successful years and if it blends well with other fairground events.
Shoshone County Wallace
The city will receive a $4,000 matching grant from Idaho Heritage Trust. The money will be used to restore the swimming pool which was built in 1939. The Trust is a nonprofit organization that awards grants and provides technical architectural and conservation assistance to communities to preserve historic buildings, archeological sites and artifacts.

Lincoln County Libby
Linda Beaulieu resigned last Tuesday as executive director of the Chamber of Commerce but will finish out the year. She worked for Western Security Bank before the chamber hired her in 1998. She’ll start 2001 working with her husband, Jim, in their business, Pacific Western Log Homes and Services.
