Catholic Charities Collects $198,633
More than 1,800 people have donated a total of $198,633 to Catholic Charities’ annual Christmas Collection, according to the most recent audit.
The charity hopes to raise $650,000 this holiday season to support a variety of programs throughout Eastern Washington.
The Catholic Diocese of Spokane runs the largest private charity in the region. More than 100,000 people of all faiths receive assistance every year.
While the donations are coming in at the same pace as previous years, the goal is higher this year, said Mary Ann Heskett, development director for the nonprofit organization.
The extra money is needed to cover the higher costs of operating two new homeless shelters - the House of Charity for street people and St. Margaret’s Shelter for women and children.
Donations can be put in the offering plate at any Catholic church during any Christmas service. They can also be mailed to the Catholic Charities Christmas Collection at P.O. Box 1453, Spokane, WA 99210. Every year more than 10 percent of the donations come from nonCatholics. For information, call 358-4250.
