Ewu Dorms Get Net Provider
Spokane’s Tsunami Communications has agreed to provide cable modem services to about 1,000 Eastern Washington University dorm rooms.
Starting in January, Tsunami will provide the same Internet service that students had received through ISP Channel of San Francisco. Earlier this year, ISP announced it was closing its Washington state accounts on Jan. 1.
Cable modem service is part of the university’s campus housing package and is covered by EWU room and board fees.
Tsunami President Mike Funk said his company also plans to better manage the network bandwidth in and out of the EWU dorms.
Because of heavy student use - especially for music-download software like Napster - Cheney residential and business cable customers have struggled with slow network speeds.
Funk said Tsunami will separate the network into Cheney residential/business users and another group just for EWU. “That’s a key step in helping both groups have reliable and adequate services,” Funk said.
