West Valley Grapples With Loss
West Valley’s wrestling team ran into a Great Northern League buzzsaw when it hosted a Frontier League-GNL double dual.
The 3A Eagles lost to Class 2A powers Lakeside and Medical Lake, losing the first eight matches to each.
They trailed the Cardinals 39-0 and Lakeside 38-0 before Anthony Hernandez won 18-11 and 13-1 decisions at 152 pounds. Medical Lake won 52-13 and Lakeside won 41-28.
Other Eagle victors were Luke Roberts and Adam Aldendorf twice each at 189 and 215 pounds.
Pat Gannon and Travis Collins won at 171 and 275 pounds respectively against Lakeside.
Valley Christian keeps rolling
Bad weather forced postponement of a couple of BiCounty League games for Valley Christian basketball teams.
But once the Panthers got back on the court, the results followed form.
The boys parlayed tough defense and 50 percent shooting to hand Reardan its first league defeat 48-31.
The road victory improved VC to 3-0 in league and 4-1 overall.
Brent Decker, Valley Christian’s leading scorer with a 20.0 average, scored 14 points and Joel Knigge added 12.
The girls, by contrast, turned up the offense a notch, scoring 83 points in a 22-point victory at Reardan.
Four players were in double figures, Carli Smith approaching her 23.7 scoring average with a game high 22.
Kasie Cupp, in double figures for the fifth straight game, added 19 points. She’s averaging 15.5 per outing.
Brandi Nunnally and Jenae Monforton each had 10 points for the 6-0 team.
WV girls need to regroup
Wins continue to be hard to come by for West Valley’s girls basketball team.
A fourth-quarter lull cost them during last Tuesday’s 48-43 loss to nemesis Cheney.
The Eagles had rallied from a six-point deficit to trail by just a point after three quarters.
But they fell behind by 10 with two minutes left in the game and couldn’t catch up.
Loss dropped the Eagles to 2-5 for the year and 1-5 in league.
Amanda Holstrom led scoring with 14 points and team scoring leader Chelsey Thomas added 10.
