Churches Offer Special Services To Mark The New Year
With Christmas celebrations over and done, it’s time for churches to ring in the new year. Several South Side and West Plains churches are planning special worship services and celebrations on New Year’s Eve.
The Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Evangelist has changed its normal worship schedule. Services will begin at 8 and 10 a.m. Sunday, with a brunch served following the 10 o’clock service. Donations will be accepted to cover the cost of the meal.
The congregation will ring in the new year with a special worship service at 11 p.m. Sunday. The Cathedral will open its labyrinth Sunday afternoon from 1 to 4 and Sunday night from 10 to 1 a.m. It also will be accessible from 1 to 4 p.m. on Monday.
The Cathedral is located at 127 E. 12th.
Cheney United Methodist Church will host an “End of the World Potluck” Sunday in honor of the new year. The potluck will be held between the 8:30 and 11 a.m. worship services, beginning at about 9:45 a.m.
The church is located at 204 Fourth in Cheney.
In addition to its normal 10:30 a.m. worship service Sunday, St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church will host a New Year’s Eve worship service at 6:30 p.m. Sunday. The service will be preceded by a potluck dinner at 5:30 p.m.
The church is located at 2 W. Third.
The Unity Church of Truth, 2900 S. Bernard, will start its New Year’s Eve celebration with its 14th annual World Peace Meditation at 3:45 a.m. Sunday. Those attending will be treated to breakfast beginning at 5:30 a.m.
The celebration will continue with a Burning Bowl service at 8 p.m. During the service, participants write down feelings or problems they no longer wish to be burdened with. The scraps of paper are then burned in a special bowl.
The church’s singles group will host a New Year’s Eve party for everyone beginning at 9 p.m. The schedule of activities includes dancing, music and games. Those planning to attend are asked to bring snacks and nonalcoholic beverages to share.
