Christmas Trees Can Be Left For Recycling At Three Stations

From Staff

Spokane Regional Solid Waste System is accepting Christmas trees for recycling into compost.

Trees picked up during regular garbage collection at the curb are burned for electricity.

But Jessie Lang, the system’s recycling coordinator, said it’s more environmentally friendly to recycle the trees.

“It’s a more permanent beneficial use,” Lang said. “We’re just giving people all the options so they can choose.”

Trees for composting will be accepted at the North Transfer Station, 22123 N. Elk-Chattaroy, the Valley Transfer Station, 3941 N. Sullivan, and the Waste to Energy Plant, 2900 S. Geiger.

All decorations must be cleared from the trees, Lang said. Trees taller than 6 feet should be cut into sections 6 feet or less.

Trunks of trees must be less than 3 inches in diameter.

There is no fee or deadline for dropping off a tree.
