County commissioners are considering repealing the gambling tax ordinance because it generates so little money. The ordinance applies only to businesses outside incorporated areas.

A $500 reward is offered for help nabbing those responsible for three armed robberies here since Nov. 25. The most recent victim was Halbert’s Store, which was held up by two men wearing ski masks. The robbers, described as Hispanic and wielding a revolver, stole several hundred dollars from the store.

McInroy Meats is closing. It has been a part of the community since the city began. Owner Earl Ferguson says the plant is as good as any in the country, but he and daughter-in-law and longtime employee Susan need a break.

Eastern Washington University will host a free Martin Luther King Jr. Day celebration and reception Jan. 16 on campus.

Merchants will pile on the presents for the first baby of 2001. The gifts, which include camcorder usage, haircuts, movies, dinners, automotive services and gift certificates, will go to the first child born at Mount Carmel Hospital after midnight tonight. Local merchants have been holding this contest for 51 years.

Wayne Kisinger solved the problem of a surplus house on Thorn Street, agreeing to buy it for $3,500 and restore it within a year. The city will waive permit fees. The former owner had signed the property over to the city rather than have to follow a city mandate to remove the house under a dangerous structure ordinance.

Fifth-grade finalists for Heyburn Elementary School’s geography bee Jan. 12 are Jessica Sperber, Samantha Renaldo, Chelsea Mende, Logan Sachett, Lacy Brown, Kaytlin Comack, Orey Gilmore, Dalton Baker and Caitlin Nichols. The winner will take a written exam to qualify for state competition April 7 in Boise.

Stimson Lumber’s 130 employees in all departments, except the planer and shipping departments, were given a few extra days for the holidays. Operation returned to full scale Friday.

Crossroads Chapel will host a Sunday Night Hymn Sing at 7 for anyone wishing to participate. Special music will also be provided by participating churches.

An art and essay contest for Moscow students is being held by the Latah County Human Rights Task Force. The Martin Luther King Jr. contest is encouraging students to write about what they can do to fight racism and prejudice. Registration deadline is Jan. 12. Call (208) 882-3648.

The East Shoshone Hospital District needs a trustee to fill a seat left vacant by Mike Dancer. The four-year term will be filled Feb. 6 by election. If interested, file a declaration by 5 p.m. Friday at 112 First St. in Woodland Park or at the courthouse in Wallace.
