Mead Builds A Victory Without Boards
GSL girls basketball
Lou Dunham and Art Rojas both saw things they didn’t like Tuesday night, but Dunham found reason to smile.
The Mead High coach shook off a disappointing rebounding effort after his Panthers defeated Ferris 48-32 at Mead.
That dropped Ferris into a three-way tie for second in the loss column of the Greater Spokane League girls basketball standings with Mead and CV, one loss behind idle Gonzaga Prep.
“To go out and rebound like we did at CV (on Friday) and come out and do this is not good,” Dunham said, referring to the Saxons’ 18 offensive rebounds. “We gave them way too many shots, but they weren’t hitting.”
And that’s why Rojas, the Ferris coach, didn’t even want to know what his Saxons shot.
“We played fine, we just couldn’t score,” Rojas said. “We outrebounded them big-time and got a lot of good shots, we just couldn’t hit a thing. Our defense was fine. I thought we did everything, we just couldn’t put the ball in the hole.”
The Saxons hit 33 percent (9 of 27) in the first half, only because Kemi Olajoyegbe and Brynn Kelly came off the bench to hit 6 of 7. They also combined for a total of 15 rebounds, 10 by the 6-foot-2 freshman Kelly.
Mead led 14-6 after one quarter as Leah Gonnella had 10 of her 16 points. It was 24-18 at halftime only because the Panthers hit 12 of 13 free throws.
Then the Saxons got really cold, hitting 6 of 33 in the second half.
Jenny Benzel and Katie Foster, who combined for more than 23 points a game, finished with six for the Saxons. Foster hit two free throws and Benzel had two baskets in the fourth quarter.
“Our defensive intensity was there again tonight when we needed it,” Dunham said.
Leading the charge was Melissa Brodsky, who also pulled down a team-high nine rebounds.
“I enjoy (defense), actually,” Brodsky said. “I’ve just always enjoyed defense and the other things. I’m not looking to score. I just want to help the team.”
