Council Vacancy Filled In Colville
The Colville City Council has filled a vacancy created by the election of Councilman Bob Anderson as mayor, and the Newport City Council plans to fill two vacancies Monday.
In Colville, Lew Janke was appointed to fill out Anderson’s term in the Ward 3 position he abandoned last month to become mayor. Janke, 52, is a 23-year Colville resident who is in charge of engineering services for the Colville National Forest.
In Newport, the council has eight candidates for vacancies created by the unexpected resignations of Ted Holden and Fred Anderson. Holden, who was re-elected last November, cited personal reasons for his resignation while Anderson, who was newly elected last November, lost his job and had to move.
Anderson, a Pend Oreille County appraiser, was laid off because of budget cuts required by the passage of Initiative 695.
Candidates for the vacancies are: Joseph King, Carol Cherry, Sandi Lewis, Mercy Jacobsen, Terence Gardner, Gary Merrill, Shirley Sands, Judylee Smith.
